My father passed away in November after a short, brave battle with that ceaseless piece of shit, cancer. I get angry at the time robbed from him to enjoy his retirement after working so hard for most of his life, but at the same time, he lived a great life and made the most of it. The last year was filled with moments of hope and moments of dread with the latter eventually winning out. To echo something Siedah said to me, he was the kind of person who no matter who got to know him, they had a need to make him proud. He had a lot to be proud of. He had a big heart behind an armor of steel but that shield softened as he got older and a more vulnerable version of my dad grew out of that. I learned so much from him, the hunger for learning how to do things yourself, the value in silence, how to treat people and so on. I will miss fishing with him, arguing politics, complaining about the dolphins, and just sitting with him and watching Blue Bloods or some awful show like that. He was a force, a badass, a great parent and grandparent and great grandparent and he will be missed massively. There is so much to say about him and I’m looking forward to hearing some stories and seeing old faces this Sunday at his Celebration of Life, from 12 - 3 p.m. at the Mansion at Tuckahoe in Jensen.

Everyone is welcome. by @jonrhoads

My mother passed away a couple weeks ago and I’ve waited to write anything about it because I just wanted to sit for a minute in the weirdness that is losing a parent. My mother had Alzheimer’s, which makes for a complicated form of grief, one that takes years to unfold. As she declined and changed, I grieved every version of her that went away, every aspect of her personality that left. Her eventual death left me with an emptiness but also an overwhelming sense of relief, for her, myself, and my siblings. My mother was a special person, so kind and disarming, yet mysterious and complicated. There are so many things I later learned about her life and so many things I will never know. One thing about her that was uncomplicated was her love for everyone, every single person. She devoted her whole life to taking care of and fighting for others, at times at the cost of her own well-being. I owe a lot of my personality to her. The humor started with her, the tendency to keep things close to the vest started with her, the outrageous empathy for people in need started with her. My love for music, movies, and creativity started with her. I’m glad she got to meet Remy but I’m sad for him not growing up with her influence, I will just have to make sure to pass that on myself. by @jonrhoads
