His church was on the water. My grandfather wasn’t a man of many words, but he often said that his church was on the water. Growing up, I would’ve assumed that if he had to pick a faith to follow, it would be fishing. Everyone who met him knew how much he loved to fish; you couldn’t be considered family without going fishing with him at least once. And for many of my family members, the first fish they ever caught was right alongside my grandfather. Mine was a Pinfish. However, the presence of water in his life beyond fishing didn’t become apparent to me until his funeral service this year. I heard many stories that day which intrinsically tied his soul to water. He often skipped school with his classmates to jump into the Davie Canal by a rope swing he made. He always had his favorite drink in hand, Ritz Seltzer, along with his dip cup after his long work shifts. He took his children to Six Flags on a hot, summer day to ride the river rapids. He enjoyed swimming with his kids and grandkids, and even taught a few of them how. He loved the Bahamas and cherished the several trips he took there. And, after he passed, my grandmother found his camera roll filled with his favorite thing that no one ever realized: sunsets on the water. All these scenes created a thread throughout his life for me to follow, similar to a fishing line. This piece is painted on one of his favorite fishing shirts, interwoven with the familiar touch of fishing gear. It honors the life my grandfather lived and is a tribute to the man who loved his church on the water as much as I loved him.

Tonight, we are celebrating the 72-Hour Film Challenge that Mike Marrero and I started more than 10 years ago by showing some of the audience favorites at Williams Hall in Key West! And I’m excited to say that Frances Eaton will be making an appearance! 🎬 Here are some photos from producing the event and making my own films throughout the years. 🎬 @williamshall_kw says: “We’re cracking open the vault for the Best of the 72-Hour Film Challenge-a screening of the most talked-about, laughed-about, and still-quoted audience favorites from more than a decade of local filmmaking chaos. No sleep. No budgets. Big laughs. Inside jokes guaranteed. You’ll laugh, cringe, and definitely recognize someone. Come celebrate the chaos.” Hope to see you there! 🎬🎬🎬
