My first book, “Catch Pull Recover” is now available on Amazon in e-book and paperback. It’s a short memoir capturing my recent swim journey as a beginner to open ocean competitor. Link in bio for details. Please leave a review! by @jonstormswims

🏊‍♂️ Excellent swim this morning. Even though clarity was not great (and non-existent in parts) still encountered plenty of critters and had a good mix of conditions. 🌊

Mahalos to @waikikiroughwaterswim for hosting another epic endurance challenge, the Looong Distance Invitational 7k “double roughwater”. 🌊 🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️

We had an excellent mix of ocean conditions making for a tough but well-fought battle, and it was amazing to see so many of our swim friends show up to support and cheer us on at the finish!

Special shout out to @triplerushclothing aka Jaime for the kayak support, Nick for the company and motivation, and @flightdoc01 for having me wonder for a solid hour who that was next to me lol!

Congrats to all the swimmers and we will see you in the water again soon!

🏊‍♂️ Swim for Alligator Lighthouse 🐊

An 8-mile swim in the Florida Keys. And while this event has been held since 2013 I was fortunate enough to participate in the toughest conditions since its inception (or so I was told).

This experience taught me so many things about the water and about myself.

The surface conditions were choppy with ever-present rolling waves. I had a head current on the way out and halfway on the way back. I just couldn’t seem to settle into a stroke as it felt the water had other plans.

The moon jellyfish were everywhere and while I did a pretty decent job of playing dodgeball I did get two direct hits to my face after turning my head to look at a shark.

When I finally rounded the lighthouse my pace and stroke completely fell apart and I could tell something was wrong. I had plenty of energy but my chest was tight and limbs tingly. I made it (barely) from buoy 14 to buoy 7 before (warning: graphic) before throwing up 3 times.

After that I felt better and made a strong effort to buoy 3. From there I began overheating due to the high water temp and after finally finishing I took a chair in some shade and a very kind volunteer helped me with an ice towel, cold water, and a cup of ice. After about 20 minutes I was back to my old self.

I ended up placing 4th in my age group with a time of 5:57 and was among the 72 solo finishers out of a 129 registered. 🤙

Mahalo to the event organizers and founders for putting on such a well-run endurance swim and for all the volunteers who kept everyone safe. And a special mahalo to my support kayaker Jaime from
@triplerushclothing and teammate for keeping me fueled, on-track, and encouraged. We did it!!

And while this was a challenge I was not expecting, I learned so much and am ready to get back to Hawaii!

Rainy morning turned into a beautiful swim with plenty of company along the way — spinner dolphins, a monk seal, fish, and a turtle. 🐬🦭🐢

Not a bad way to spend a morning in the ocean. 🤙🏼

Second town swim since the tropical storm. Conditions improving. Saw dolphins, a spotted Eagle Ray came up to say hi, and managed to avoid a throttle-happy boat zooming through the channel. 🛥️ 😳

🌊 Excellent swim this morning from Sunset to Chun’s.

Challenging current all the way to Keiki Point, neutral until Three Tables, and then a nice push the rest of the way. Immediately could hear the dolphins when entering the bay but nothing in sight. Then, just before passing the outer rock islet, they appeared! 🐬

10k prep. Wind didn’t pick up until Sunset. Surf around Pipe and Rocky Point. A bit of a treadmill in sections between Sunset and Keikis. Said hi to Junior Lifeguards. Overall great swim. @kookimonstah is ready to crush it this Saturday!!
