This is a shino plate fired in the wood kiln @studiotouya. The second image in the series is my son, Jordy's @jordyyager, personal edit of the first image. It seems that he thought that the plate was nice, but needed a spa day. by @jonyagerpottery

We were in the Pocono Mountains this week, taking some pictures in the ferns and stumps and streams of some pots I brought along.

This vase was anagama fired @noahwoodfired a couple of years ago. Like the old 45 rpm records, it has a side A and side B. And it seems to feel right at home in the woods. by @jonyagerpottery

This wood fired bowl feels right at home nestled in a tree stump. There is a mysteriousness, and a familiarity. You capture the bowl without actually seeing it. by @jonyagerpottery

Another blast from the past. I made this 15 inch platter in the late 80s when I was infatuated with slip work. It was part of a kiln load of oxidized pieces; hence the beige/tan undertones.

Looking back at it now, it seems pretty tame. These days I'd be more likely to just throw the bucket of slip at it. But it has a quality of movement, balanced with a sense of peacefulness and serenity.

Fired with gas; cone 10 oxidation. by @jonyagerpottery

This is a tenmoku tea bowl from the May 2024 anagama workshop firing with Ken Matsuzaki at Muddy Creek Pottery. It got doused with ash and marvelous color.

Each element does its part: the clay, the fire, the atmosphere, the ash. And the potter stands by open mouthed at the marvel.

At its best, pottery captures nature. Like a photograph captures a moment in time. The elements solidify and capture a moment of the extraordinariness of nature. by @jonyagerpottery

Here's a piece in action. This bowl is doing what it was born to do.
.
A piece of pottery has its stand alone beauty, but it also comes alive when it acts as a canvas for the sumptuous color and texture and taste of food.

Vases hiding in the ferns. These are a couple of vases fired in Noah Hughey Commers anagama kiln in May of 2024. A four day firing workshop with Ken Matsuzaki.

I kneaded some granite chips from a local quarry into the clay that give them the pock marks and white spots of feldspar.

They are beautiful inside holding flowers, but almost better outside with the ferns. by @jonyagerpottery
