Oh Captain, my Captain! 10 days on the Swollen Goat from Onset to Newport to Block Island to Martha’s Vineyard, the seas have gently carried us, flanked by hundreds of dolphin escorts. The one day it was storming and there were 5 footers, we were tucked safely in our slip playing pinball at the Empire Theatre. With our riad next to the Koutoubia Mosque, the largest in Marrakech, we can hear the echoing prayer calls beginning at dawn. We wandered the serpentine souks of the medina, carefully dodging the men thrusting diapered monkeys into our arms, and tasted dates, figs, olives, spicy sand coffee, and loaves of bread fresh from the communal oven. We studied the dyers dyeing agave silk. With great advice for navigating through the haggle mart’s replica pieces, we visited reputable shops for an engraved Berber cuff for Charlotte, a Tuareg talisman for Sophia, and a hand and foot carved wooden chess set for Henry. After an incredible sunset dinner on the rooftop, we joined in the vivacious celebration in the plaza and finished off propped up on satin pillows with drinks and an extravagant, flame-throwing belly dancing show at Palais Jad Mahal. #marrakech #berber #morroco #bellydancer #africa taken in Marrakech, Morocco by @jopeezes

On our way to hike the Atlas Mountains, we stopped into a cooperative that promotes direct buying from women artisans for their skilled, labor-intensive efforts. We chose an exquisite woven piece, perfect in its tiny deviations, the hallmark of soulful, handcrafted beauty. Madrid is a city with an obvious and remarkable beauty in its architecture and lavish parks.The windows that line the streets beckon customers in from quaint, traditional stores to chic, contemporary boutiques. Stylish women wearing scarves, Prada shopping bags slung over their shoulders zip by on their Vespas. What I enjoyed most about Madrid is its little whispers. The way the Tintoretto paintings at the Museo del Prado slowly reveal themselves to you as you carefully creep around them. El Ratoncito Pérez, the mouse who serves as Spain’s tooth fairy has tiny hideaways that you can find throughout the city. At the Convent Las Carboneras in the Monasterio del Corpus Christi the nuns are cloistered with no contact with the outside world. Still, they raise funds selling sweets to the public. The workaround: you ring the convent door and call, “¿Tienen dulces hoy?” If they buzz you in, you walk downstairs where you speak your order and place cash into the echoing darkness of a lazy Susan sort of rotating wooden cabinet. They might call back to you in Spanish, “No, sorry we have no almond biscuits today” but otherwise, the nuns remain sight unseen, and spin the turntable where your sweets and change appear. #spain #madrid #flamenco taken in Madrid, Spain by @jopeezes

Today in Toledo they are preparing for the Corpus Christi Festival. There will be a grand procession and feast. Flowers fill the streets, fragrant herb bundles hang from the awnings, and ornate tapestries are draped from balconies. Neighbors have opened their hidden patios to showcase Renaissance splendor for the competition. We worked our way through the labyrinth visiting the Greco collection, impressive churches and synagogues, and shops filled with giant swords, ceramics, and oranges sculpted from marzipan. Little-known fact: it’s called Toledo because the streets are so narrow that you have to watch your toes when the cars pass by. 😆 #spain #toledo #corpuschristifestival taken in Toledo, Spain by @jopeezes

Barcelona! ♥️ The people are gorgeous and warm. For me, the lifestyle is perfection. Late, breezy suppers of tapas or pintxos accompanied by a glass of good Spanish wine are always, in my opinion, ideal. We visited our first-ever Vermutería! My already enormous adoration for Antonio Gaudi has grown exponentially.
