That circular rainbow is called a glory. It forms when the sun is directly behind the aircraft and its shadow is cast onto a cloud below. Sunlight bounces back through tiny cloud droplets, and the waves interfere with each other to create concentric colored rings around the shadow. It’s not painted on the cloud — it travels with the airplane, centered every time on its own shadow

Here are a few photos that I took from Ground Zero in September of 2006, just five years after the attacks. I was working an internship at JetBlue Airways and visited the site one weekend. Crews were still digging at Ground Zero. This is a collection of photos I took around the site and inside St. Paul’s Chapel. That chapel survived the devastation and provided refuge for many people. As a part of the internship, we were able to take a tour of JFK tower and talk to the Air Traffic Control Tower and speak to controllers who were working on 9/11. I can’t remember the exact words, but you can imagine the chaos in that tower the day that it happened. Rest in peace to all of the souls that lost their lives that day 🕊️

Ever wonder how BIG the tires are on a Boeing 747‑8? 🛫🔧
Nose gear tire:
• Diameter: ~50 in (1.27 m)
• Width: ~20 in (0.51 m)
• Weight: ~220–235 lb (100–107 kg)
Main gear tire:
• Diameter: ~52 in (1.32 m)
• Width: ~21 in (0.53 m)
• Weight: ~270 lb (122 kg)

That’s 18 total tires holding up an over 900,000‑lb (408,230kg) jet.✈️

This is the lavatory on a Boeing 747–8. It’s just over 2 feet wide, so plenty of room to get your business done. Smoking on airplanes was banned years ago. However, per FAA regulation, aircraft are still required to have an ashtray in case someone smokes. The industry would rather they have a safe place to put the ashes versus catching trash on fire. 🚭

This is the Boeing 747–400 BCF or “Boeing Converted Freighter”. Some people call it “the big top” due to the larger hump at the top of the plane. This aircraft used to carry passengers, but was converted to carry cargo only. Strictly freighter versions have a smaller hump at the top of the plane.
