Incredible to see this profile in the @nytimes by the brilliant and thoughtful @lizegan3. The piece makes lovely mention of Luna, Phoenix, Queen, but also does honor to my husband, Ryan Harty, whose 2003 story collection, Bring Me Your Saddest Arizona, you should read right now! And excellent cameo by Hazel. Beautiful photos in Maine by @p_guilmoth, my fellow @macdowell1907 fellow. Link in bio. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @jorringer

Yes, and there’s also a girl in a deer mask, and a deep lake, and some tiny owls, and some really bad weather, just saying. #lunaphoenixqueen by @jorringer

Thought I was taking a break from anything book-related today by visiting the farmers and their perfect peppers and squashes and carrots and beets and greens. And then I remembered there’s a farmer’s market on the first page of #lunaphoenixqueen. #haha taken in Park Slope by @jorringer

Milo:

“The work I’m doing on this page reminds me of conversations I had with my editor, Jordan Pavlin, as I was revising The Invisible Bridge. Jordan has always wanted me to inquire more deeply into my characters’ motivations and relationships, to think about why they behave the way they do: What does Milo want from his father? Justice? Wisdom? I often feel as if I’m channeling Jordan’s editorial practice when I reread, which makes sense: we’ve worked together now for more than twenty years.”

Reading of novel May 2025:

“I made these notes while I was at the Hermitage Artists’ Residency in Florida, at a time when I was scrutinizing the novel’s first section and thinking deeply about the relationship between Barr and Svetlana—they’re connected through their mutual love for Dava, but they’ve never spoken about it openly. What would that feel like? A careful reading of the draft by the novelist Caleb Crain precipitated these questions.”

Post-It:

“My daughter gave me this drawing a time when I was particularly frustrated with my revision. I love the determination of the little bird flying undaunted into the green wave. The ultra-long-haired girl in her plaid skirt doesn’t look at all worried; she radiates calm encouragement. And in fact the little bird is flying upward still, and the wave hasn’t hit yet.”
—Julie

Milo and Naomi:

“Lots of timeline questions here, among them an exploration of how old Milo and Naomi should be in the sections they share. The key question appears near the top of the page: what it was like for Milo, as a young teenager, to be parented by Dava as she was experiencing the onset of her Alzheimer’s symptoms? I could almost not bear to consider the answer to that question. But the novel required it.”

James:

“This page captures an important moment of insight: I’m discovering that a section originally told from Milo’s point of view by @jorringer
