Invocation II, 2025, Inkjet print on lightbox, 40 x 50 cm

On view at Safehouse 1, Peckham, London

Invocation is a photographic series that delves into the primordial language of nature, where patterns become utterances and natural forms give way to the symbolic. Each image calls forth the continuous flow and spirits that reside in nature, materialized in ghostly appearances of light in the middle of night.

Made through analog means, the act of photographing the ephemeral light instalation in the middle of the night is a ritual in itself. taken in Safehouse 1 & 2 by @jose.crd.l

Untitled, 2026, O group (Yihan Pan & José Cardenas)

Stone, Glass, Inkjet Prints

Part of our work during the winter 2026 @aranyaartcenter residency

A reflection on materiality, weight, lightness and abstraction.
Contemporary photographs of the northern great wall of China and the flora surrounding it appear to float on carved stones.
One grows out of it while the other splits it in half, a portrayal of nature and humanity's relationship to the mountain. taken in The Great Wall at Jinshanling 金山岭长城 by @jose.crd.l

Fossil, 2026
Archival Inkjet Print
130 X 90 cm

While on a hike near the northern great wall I observed a geological formation on the side of a cliff. Its concentric rings made me stop to shoot it. Now I know it's possibly a stromatolite fossil, one of the oldest biogenic geological structures you can find. These colonies of microbes can be more than 1 billion years old and they are the reason breathable oxygen exists on earth.

We continued walking to visit an old daoist temple carved into the mountain, inside, figures of old idols rest in the dark. I cannot show them out of respect but they seemed to be alive.
The temple is the mountain itself, every step I took was on sacred ground. by @jose.crd.l

⛰️ Phase II — Guided Tour

O Group (José Cárdenas & Yihan Pan)
Ananda Firman Syarif

At the threshold between deep winter and early spring, artists from China and around the world entered the mountainous landscape of Jin Shan Ling.

🍂❄️🌿 🌸

Working amid cold temperatures, wind, snow, and the gradual return of warmth, they developed their practices in close relation to the rhythms of the natural environment, leaving behind distinct traces of their residency.

Approaching the terrain through diverse media and perspectives, the works respond to vegetation, climate, topography, and time, while also carrying the artists’ embodied experiences and perceptions. In an ongoing dialogue with the environment, these works do not assert themselves prominently; rather, they become presences that are slowly perceived within the rhythms of mountain life.

Monument to a body, 2026, O Group ( José Cárdenas & Yihan Pan)

Stone, Inkjet Prints

Detail shots of our work at @aranyaartcenter for the winter 2026 residency.

A series of natural images are embedded within stones of varying sizes, with both images and materials sourced or photographed locally by the two artists. The work is composed of multiple interrelated fragments, dispersed throughout the Upper Cloister—a semi-outdoor space defined by natural rock, situated between the artificial and the natural.
Here, the mountain is transformed into a kind of embodied presence at a human scale. The micro-images and the stones themselves together form a dispersed mode of viewing the winter landscape of Jinshanling crossed by the northern Great Wall. The artists utilize the raw materials used to build it to reflect on the ongoing transformation of the local natural environment, while also pointing to the broader, deeply rooted history of industrial extraction in the Hebei region, its relation to the embodied natural landscape and the beings that inhabit it. taken in The Great Wall at Jinshanling 金山岭长城 by @jose.crd.l

We are thankful to @itsnicethat magazine and writer Paul Moore for the beautiful article on our collaborative photobook “Uncertainties”

“The duo were drawn to subjects that feel fragile, overlooked or unresolved, inspired by the “vertiginous nature of realising that they lived in the margins of the wider world”. The photographs have a textural interplay that is fascinating – in one diptych, a television shows fuzzy static and next to it, an image shows an almost cosmic, glittering downpour of rain. It recontextualises rain as a type of natural static that happens in the air. But both images capture the inbetween of places, the inbetween of channels and the inbetween of ground and cloud.”

Dire fruit, which, tasted once, must thrall me here.
Afar those skies from this Tartarean grey
That chills me: and afar how far away,
The nights that shall become the days that were.

Mercurial Landscapes (II-III-IV-V), 2025, Inkjet Prints, 220 cm x 80 cm each

On view a few weeks ago at The Handbag Gallery in Vauxhall, London.

These digitally altered photographs of 1:1 scale of plants associated with the remaining temperate rainforests of the UK ask how can we preserve a decaying ecosystem that usually blends into the background of the landscape. Remininscent of classic tapestry designs and botanical illustration, the work reflects on how we can preserve the fragility of living organisms in the age of digital imagemaking. taken in The Handbag Factory by @jose.crd.l
