Sometimes a painting needs to be painted over.

From an earlier work from this year that felt too much like an illustration of an idea. I wanted something rawer, something that could embody energy rather than simply represent it.

I’m interested in what happens when paint becomes an active force in the creative process, when layers are obscured and uncovered, and something unexpected begins to surface.

Piercing the veil. Descending energy. Uncovering what lies beneath. For me, painting is an exploration of the mysterious space between things, the shifting layers of interspace where the visible and invisible meet.

Capturing the energy of light. At least, that’s the starting point. The canvas becomes a meditation, a place for invisible forces moving through space to take form. Layer by layer, a snapshot emerges: floating, falling, drifting energies dancing across the surface. I keep returning to the idea that we are energy presenting as matter. That idea is my guide and where the painting begins. by @josephgoldfedder

“Energy of Compression”, Acrylic on Canvas, 20” x 24”

I try to tune into a painting and listen for what it’s asking me. Playing with the idea of the formless taking form, I created a kind of container for this painting. Not quite sure if it’s an object or a symbol and I like that. As part of a series this painting is another step in my explorations. With this painting I’ve been wondering how I could make it as sculpture. by @josephgoldfedder

“Dimensional Shift”, Acrylic on Canvas, 22” x 28”

The primary images remained throughout the painting process, but how they evolved changed considerably. Again, I wasn’t happy with where the painting was going. So I kept pushing—ruining it, rebuilding it, and watching as something new emerged. Allowing the medium to speak. When I felt complete the new was also something familiar. Allowing the painting to fall apart so something aligned within me can find its way. by @josephgoldfedder

“Secret Threads of Healing”, Acrylic on Canvas, 18” x 24”

When I was a kid, I didn’t take myself too seriously when I was drawing or painting. Making art was just play. Remembering that now, I try to let the brush move - allowing shapes to form without knowing where they’re going. Until a thread of memory emerges. An idea or possibility reveals itself. That’s when the painting, to some extent, starts to take shape. by @josephgoldfedder

This morning I remembered that I graduated from Southwest Acupuncture College in Albuquerque, New Mexico 20 years ago. I found this picture from that day with my dear friend and classmate Barbara. For the occasion of our graduation I had made a clay relief dragon plaque with the names of our graduating class, Class of 2006. Shout out to my classmates! by @josephgoldfedder

“Dreaming in Color”, Acrylic on Canvas, 16” x 20”

Recently, I dreamed of a squat, cartoonish grasshopper with a roundish face, staring back at me. I wondered if it was going to fly up toward me. It didn’t. However, its distinct presence has stayed with me. While working on this painting, a glimmer of that dream returned, and the feeling-tone of the memory emerged as I worked. More and more I’m exploring color intuitively while allowing the painting to unfold organically. by @josephgoldfedder

“Double Dragon”, Acrylic on Canvas, 20” x 24”

This painting is a transformation of an earlier work I completed in January called “Soul Friends”. I painted over it, but some traces of the original still live beneath the surface. I’m exploring a more fluid, watery style here, less about control, more about allowing energy to move through and define the painting. Two heads reemerge again, but now with a mythic dragon like presence. by @josephgoldfedder

Come meet ISD’s featured July artist in the Lotus Center Gallery, Joseph Goldfedder: Artist, intuitive healing practitioner and medium.

August 2nd, 12-1:30pm

We will enjoy a wine and cheese reception and a presentation from Joseph about his process. He will also give auragraph readings to a few lucky people! An auragraph is a a channeled piece of artwork that is done during a psychic mediumship session.

I reworked this painting because it never felt completely finished. It described something, but it didn't quite embody it. I'm still learning how to reach that tipping point where the paint begins to speak for itself. Somehow, that adventurous spirit I seek shows up at night. I take more chances, I'll make a mark I never planned, walk away, and when I come back, that's often where the painting comes alive.

And that’s where the juicy stuff happens. by @josephgoldfedder

This painting has evolved through many iterations as I continue learning this medium. Some parts feel complete, while others still challenge me. A new vision is beginning to emerge, and I’m following where it takes me. by @josephgoldfedder
