Moments in time… by @josephsjoyce

🔊 Hey all, sharing a new 2-track release from me today:

1. Phase Mist: a dubby roller, built around repetition, phase shifting, and echo.

2. Distance: leans more melodic, with a slightly off-centre feel, looped motifs and detuned harmonies unfolding gradually over a steady rhythm.

Available to stream or download from all the usual spots. Link in bio. 🔗 by @josephsjoyce

Here’s a low level pass over the rapeseed this week. Always an incredible time of year when it comes into flower.

Here’s a clip from “Break It Down 3000” — the B-side from my new EP. This one samples the James Brown "Cold Sweat" break, which I love for its clean, airy feel and that midrange-heavy kick. It draws from ‘90s intelligent DnB: LTJ Bukem, Blame, Goodlooking Records — all those timeless atmospheric vibes.

Out today: Mechanical Evolution (🔗 in bio) marking the debut of Jsph-SJ, my new alias where I explore jungle, drumfunk, intelligent dnb and 90s-era sonic nostalgia.

The title track was shaped around a sample from 1964, where British science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke boldly predicted: "That humans are simply a stepping stone in the evolution towards an inorganic artificial intelligent life form." This quote shaped the atmosphere and structure of the track, arriving at a moment when the rise of AI feels increasingly tangible.

Mechanical Evolution features a drum break from the Wax Breaks series by @devparadox, whose aesthetic was a major influence. Final mastering comes courtesy of Harvey Jones, aka @pizzahotline_, a standout voice in the new wave of contemporary jungle production.

The second track, Break It Down 3000, is built around the iconic James Brown “Cold Sweat” break, with shimmering deep pads reminiscent of 90s intelligent dnb, punctuated by wah-wah guitar licks and dusty chord strums.

Out now on @defaultposition.

The last time Joseph S Joyce had a mix was... by @josephsjoyce

This Thursday Joseph S Joyce, head honcho of dub techno label Default Position will be coming into the Hoxton FM studio to share 90 mins of his favourite music right now. He’s promising an eclectic mix that “might include breaks.” The first time he came on was really special and is still one of my favourite shows at the old studio. This remix by him might give you a hint at what is in store. by @josephsjoyce

Our second son Joshua Elliott Joyce, arrived on Monday — March 10th, 2025.

We almost didn’t make it to the hospital in time! A rushed, nerve-wracking drive, a few panicked moments, and just minutes after arriving, he made his debut.

Mum and baby are both doing great, and big brother Jack is already smitten.
