I’ll never forget the first drive home, her need to sit in my lap the entire way, a quirk she would never grow out of. I fell in love so deeply and so quickly with her - anywhere I went, I wanted Artemis there, and she became as devoted to adventuring as myself. She loved nature. As a puppy she was so inquisitive about everything outside - every bug, every leaf, anything that moved, she wanted to know it and know about it. I credit her with saving my life. She saw me grow from an immature 21 year old way in over his head to a slightly less immature 32 year old - still in over his head a lot of the time, but wiser for it. And I saw her grow from a tiny puppy learning everything about the world to a grizzled and grayed matriarch, filled with so much attitude and sass, a personality she was able to master and express thanks to the amazing life we gave each other. She is truly a part of our soul, as we are hers.

Dogs, as well other companions, stand as proof in our ability to live harmoniously with the natural world. Much of Western naturalism has painted nature as something separate from humans that we must bend to our will. Something we are relearning is how far from the truth this actually is. Humans are a part of nature as much as any other form of life, and our very livelihood depends on that connection. It’s why Urban Ecology is crucial to me. Cities need not be the “place for people” while nature exists outside. Artemis died of a nasal tumor, a tumor that can develop due to factors like air pollution, pesticide use in parks, and wildfires, all things she was exposed to while living in Los Angeles. I don’t believe a city needs to exhibit these dangers, nor should the inhabitants of these cities, man or animal, ever be exposed to them.

Artemis was the Goddess of the Hunt, Wild Nature and the Moon. She symbolized intelligence and truth. Our Artemis was a paragon of each of these traits. She died on 7/21/2024 under a full moon, as if her own aura of divinity was calling her back. I hope to carry her legacy, and help all of us become more attuned to a world that could create something so beautiful.

Signs and Tags from the ICE Protests, 6/8/25. Los Angeles.

As a photographer, I’m always drawn to the various signs and messages that people creatively showcase. In a space that can sometimes be pure noise, signs and property tagging become the language of the oppressed, providing a focus and clarity to the message of why people are organizing. The power of tagging is an art form that has many roots in revolutionary spaces, particularly against the concrete machine of capitalism. The right arraignment of people, messages and the hands that hold them together can create powerful images explaining the why of any gathering. With enough repetition, these phrases make their way into the synchronous chants of the crowd, becoming landmark language in the fight against oppression. These were some of my favorites.

“The lands currently managed by Joshua Tree National Park include parts of the traditional homelands of the Maara’yam (Serrano), Nüwü (Chemehuevi), and Kawiya (Cahuilla), and the traditional use area of the Aha Macave (Mohave). Today, these groups are represented by 15 federally-recognized tribal governments:

Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians
Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians
Cabazon Band of Mission Indians
Cahuilla Band of Indians
Chemehuevi Indian Tribe
Colorado River Indian Tribes
Fort Mojave Indian Tribe
Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeño Indians
Morongo Band of Mission Indians
Ramona Band of Cahuilla
Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation
Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians
Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians
Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians
Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians.

Joshua Tree National Park acknowledges the 15 associated tribal communities as the original stewards of the land on which Joshua Tree National Park now sits. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work with the indigenous people of this place. We pay our respect to the people past, present and emerging who have been here since time immemorial.”
