There are singers who perform for an audience.

And then there are singers who turn the audience into singers.

At Mehfil-e-Khaas 14, Josh Crooner did exactly that.

As one of the core team members behind Mehfil-e-Khaas, Josh is usually busy making the magic happen behind the scenes—bringing artists together, building community, and helping create the space where art can flourish. But every once in a while, he steps into the spotlight and reminds us why music has always been his first love.

His rendition of Tujhse Naraaz Nahi Zindagi was more than a performance. It was a shared memory.

Within moments, voices across the room began joining in. Some sang softly. Some sang loudly. Some simply smiled through the lyrics. For a few beautiful minutes, the distinction between artist and audience disappeared, and the entire Mehfil became one voice.

That is the spirit we celebrate.

Not perfection. Not performance.

Connection.

Over the years, Josh has worn many hats—as a singer, vocal coach, curator, community builder, and passionate advocate for the arts. Yet what continues to stand out is his unwavering love for music and his ability to make people feel like they belong inside a song rather than merely listening to it.

We are deeply grateful for his musical talent, his generosity of spirit, and everything he does for Mehfil-e-Khaas.

Moments like these remind us why this gathering exists.

To celebrate art.

To celebrate artists.

And most importantly, to celebrate the audience community that keeps these songs, stories, and memories alive.

Thank you, Josh, for giving us a performance that felt less like a concert and more like a room full of friends singing together.

Some songs are heard.

Some songs are remembered.

And some songs are shared. ✨🎶

Expression is a strange thing.

People often ask how to sing with more feeling, but I don't think feeling can be manufactured. Technique can be taught. Notes can be practised. Expression seems to appear when the fear of being wrong becomes smaller than the desire to say something honestly.

Watching this old lockdown recording, I realised I wasn't trying to impress anyone. I wasn't planning phrases or analysing what I was doing. I was simply following a feeling.

There are moments in music where it feels like you're being carried by something larger than your own thinking. It can feel risky, almost as if you'll lose control.

But somewhere underneath, there is trust.

Not confidence. Trust.

And that trust lets you keep going.

I don't know if this can be taught. But I do know that creativity begins to show itself when we stop gripping so tightly and allow ourselves to be wrong.

Every interval has its own feeling.

The distance from the root note changes the emotional colour of the sound — and ascending intervals feel very different from descending ones.

Most singers focus only on songs. But songs are built from these hidden movements.

Training your ears to recognise intervals is one of the deepest ways to improve sur, expression and musical understanding 🎤

Save this for your next riyaaz session 🎧

Some days, the hardest part is just beginning.

Between work, calls, fatigue and life constantly moving… riyaaz can quietly slip away if you let it.

But I’ve realised that the voice doesn’t stay alive on waiting.

Even 10 focused minutes can reconnect you to your sur, your listening, your breath and yourself.

The phrase I didn’t get right here? I’ll keep returning to it until I do 🎤

If you’re trying to hold on to music in the middle of a busy life, this one’s for you. 🎧

Try this Singer's Vocal Warmup around Sa in C Sharp🎤

This beautiful exercise is inspired by the legendary Ghazal maestro Ustad Ghulam Ali (“Chupke Chupke Raat Din” fame).

This is the Part 2 (ascending from the root note toward the upper 5th and then chromatically descending back to the root).

Try both the parts together everyday. DM me if you need my help or feedback in developing this. The first part of this exercise can be found on my profile.

This is a wonderful way to:

• train your ear
• memorise intervals in an octave
• improve note mapping
• gently open up the lower notes

Save this and practice it slowly 🎧

And if you know singers who would enjoy practicing this, share it with them 🎤

This beautiful exercise is inspired by the legendary Ghazal maestro Ustad Ghulam Ali (“Chupke Chupke Raat Din” fame).

In this first part, we descend chromatically from the root note while staying centred around Sa and exploring all the intervals down from the lower 5th.

• improve note mapping
• gently open up the lower notes

Save this and practice it slowly 🎧

Part 2 (ascending from the root note toward the upper 5th) will be out soon — look out for it.
