What a year 2025 has been.
‌
Between surviving six-meetings-in-a-row days, delivering presentations at 1.30am, going abroad for a friend’s wedding and coming home to Singapore just 36 hours later for a week-long conference, among other intense and deeply humbling experiences — my run-of-the-mill intelligence can’t think of a word that would adequately sum up this roller-coaster of a year.
‌
The only word that comes to mind is this: together.
‌
I wouldn’t have been able to experience the gamut of work and personal milestones without the support of a wonderful team and colleagues.
‌
I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the good fortune of meeting wonderful people and learning new things without amazing friends and mentors.
‌
I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy these deep and meaningful friendships without a truly supportive ecosystem.
‌
Most of all, I certainly wouldn’t have been able to survive the rigour of this year without a wonderful, ever-patient wife (and better half) to ground and centre me.
‌
Call this cliche, but I thank my lucky stars everyday for being able to grow in a village of caring friends and loved ones. If you’re reading this, it means you’re part of that village too — and I thank you for being a part of this journey.
‌
2026 will only promise more tests ahead. But I’ll focus the final two weeks on the year in being thankful — for surviving 2025, and for being able to ride through life’s journeys together. I’m looking forward to being more mindful, grounded and present in the year ahead.
‌

Coming-of-Age 2026

Are you ready for the battle of the year? 👀🔥

Coming-of-Age is back once again, and we are excited to have Josh, Joey and Fong as our judges! 🥳

JOSH: First up, Josh brings 19 years of popping experience as a seasoned battler, teacher, and mentor in the dance scene. Grounded in respect, humility, and discipline, he sees dance as a lifelong teacher. Beyond dance, he is a member of ALT CTRL (SG) and Izakaya Worldwide (Bay Area), Co-founder of SMU Funk Movement, and a former Popping Instructor at New Heights Studio. Josh also works at the intersection of law and technology, shaping policy in the digital age. His work and leadership have earned him recognition as an ASEAN Youth Fellow, Asia21 Next Gen Leader, and a Prestige 40 Under 40 honouree (2025).

JOEY: Representing Pop Pop Cha, Joey has 13 years of experience while being an active competitor locally and globally. She has represented Singapore at Popper’s Dream 6 in China and has earned multiple achievements including winning 2nd place at NTU Funk Jam 2026 and Champion at NTU Funk Jam 2024, and Champion in Power of 2 Vol. 1.

In recent years, Joey has strengthened her involvement as a judge, including LCDC Popping 7 to Smoke in 2025 and Popping Town Philippines in 2026. Whether it is competing, judging or exchanging, she continues to develop her craft with a focus on musicality, groove and technique.

FONG: With over 20 years of experience, Fong has played a pivotal role in shaping Singapore’s street dance scene. As Co-Founder and Managing Director of New Heights Studio, and a resident coach at SMU Funk Movement, he has dedicated his career to educating and building sustainable pathways for young local dancers. Trained across multiple performing arts disciplines, Fong has choreographed and performed in major productions, while earning accolades with crews such as Sunset Alleycats and The Basic Fives. by @josheetalkbox

Amidst a crazy year, here’s a rare dance / non-work post of 2025!

Having been Popping for 18 years, as the years pass, the things that truly surprise me get less and less.

Last Sunday, however, took me completely by surprise. On a whim, and not hoping for anything at all, I joined @smufm’s EXCEED Vol. 3 5v5 battle. Crazily enough — and against all the odds — our team got the win.

It’s so surreal I’m still processing it two days on.

EXCEED is a battle competition with a unique format. You join as individuals, and after getting past the knockout rounds, are grouped into teams of 5 (along with the judges). The teams then battle it out until one wins. So — this is less a contest of one’s individual dance ability, as it is how one clicks with their teammates to carry each other to the finish.

Normally, I believe we learn more from losses than wins. But this time, I sensed something precious hidden in the events of the day — far more valuable than any win.

You see, even though we were brought together by chance, what I think truly held our team together was a shared sense of humility. Individually, we may not have been the best dancers in the room. Collectively, however, there was a sense of what I believe humility truly means: not the smallness of presence, but the largeness of perspective. Each of us brought to the dance floor not just ourselves, but the communities we brought along with us.

As with many things, the euphoria of the day will eventually pass. But it’s because of days like these that I never cease to say: dance has, and will always be, the best teacher I’ve ever had.
