Familiar fields and ground. Dropped off some work in Wichita yesterday and decided to make a day trip through central Kansas. I find the Dakota geology of the high plains so interesting. 10 million year old + rocks hide underneath a thin veil of soil and often crop out on the sides of hills exposing variegated layers of red, yellow and white under green grass and grain. Hidden within these rocks is fossilized leaf litter that was laid down in the muddy soils of ancient marshlands, forests, river banks, estuaries and beach like habitats.

“A description of place” is a set of 15 square plates that takes in geographical information from the fields around the small township where I dig my clay. These fields are tilled and managed in a functional manner but when looked at from above when searching for exposures of clay they seem almost reminiscent of modernist painting.
I decorate these patterns with red as an ode to the way geologic/ geographic maps use bright colors to represent differences in layers of earth and boundary lines in maps.

Story sale alert!

As I am packing my studio up in Lincoln I plan to put a small curated group of 5 pots a day for two-three days on my story. Starting tomorrow Tuesday May 19 at 11 am cst.

“A days labor” is a set of 77 medium sized shovel plates. I translate information from the formal language of my tools into functional pots to convey the meaning and connection that I feel in my processes.
7 shovels fills a bucket depending on the compaction of the clay

Barbotine pitcher and cups. Informed by cues from 16th century German stangenglas and Middle Minoan pottery. The little knubs were called prunts in German glass ware and we call the Minoan version barbs (barbotine ware).

Local Nebraska clay, soda fired and reduction cooled.

This set was in my thesis show “from the pit” earlier this month.
