Grateful to everyone who showed up, stayed, asked questions, and really engaged with the work during my thesis exhibition, talk, and opening.

And to those who couldn’t make it but supported from a distance I see you and I appreciate you.

Thank you to UNL for the space, support, and community that made this possible.

This wasn’t just attendance you gave the work life, conversation, and energy. Thank you for being part of my story. @unl_clay @unlsculpture @unlart @goldcoast_terracotta @unl_isso @eisentragerhoward @ceramics_knust @knustmuseum

MATERIALS MATTER - in the many exhibitions at @nceca this year, the attention to materials - their source, the origin story, melting point, combined materials, non clay materials … this post is a focus on just a few of the works throughout the shows I saw and listed their materials on their labels.

Many of the works used materials to connect to a family or cultural heritage, for others it was just the sheer joy of exploiting the material itself with a disregard for rules, embracing then using the results of experimentation.

My first visit to NCECA since 2019, it is refreshing to see the use of non clay materials and a big change from prior year surveys. It is clear evidence that there is a growing number of artists and curators who have moved on from the past dominance of the clay (and only clay) cannon. As we watch schools (@syracuseu ) absorb specialized ceramic departments into their fine art programs - and see others close entirely (@cacollegeofarts ) … we will continue to witness clay absorbed into the “fine art” world.

This past week in Colloquium, we got to celebrate Qwist’s @qwistjoseph birthday and graduate students delivered their 27 second elevator pitches, in the elevator! Too much fun all around. Such a great community to be a part of!
