This post took 25 years.

A trilogy of me and Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia’s tallest mountain.

Christmas, 2001 - I was a teenager, ignorant and ill prepared for the climb. I attempted with my dad and a family friend. I reached Sayat Sayat (the last checkpoint and hut before the summit), with altitude sickness and very little breath left. The guide said I didn’t look like I could go further. My dad and family friend reached the top without me, while I cramped badly in the hut.

July, 2014 - My second try, this time with friends. I was prepared and eager, but the weather turned against us. Despite going in a dry month, it rained most of the first day. On the second day, after Sayat Sayat, it started to drizzle, then pour. All climbers were asked to turn back.

So close, yet so far. 😭

We were asked to wait at Sayat Sayat. Then were told waiting longer could lead to pneumonia. We descended in heavy rain which had turned the entire summit into a giant and unrelenting waterfall. I will never forget abseiling down Mount Kinabalu with water splashing up to my thighs.

I vowed I would try again.

May, 2026 - I went up with another group of friends. I trained hard. I am no longer a teenager or twenty-something. I knew it would be a challenge.

We climbed with high hopes and eager prayers for good weather.

I made it to the peak!

25 years after my first attempt, I finally snagged that coloured certificate stating I reached the summit, Low’s Peak. The weather was great. Third time’s the charm, I guess. Teenage me would have been proud. 🥲

Funny how ‘old’ music made me feel younger.

Thank you to the @bluesdancingkl crew for an amazing #bdkl101010 weekend and to @pennyandlucas for being such gracious, sincere, fun and respectful teachers.

Big love to friends both old and new who danced, laughed, ate, shared and connected with me.

To many more years of connection.
