![Tone List's 10-year anniversary show is next Friday. here are some brief words and sentimentalposting about that.
in 2016 I studied with Antoine Beuger, whose most radical pieces are more than 99.9% silent and upwards of eight hours long. Antoine is an early member of the Wandelweiser collective. a summarised myth of wandelweiser's trajectory is a bit like this: their friendship, and persistence with an exceptionally uncommodifiable approach, was enough to bind them together for more than a decade amongst a near-zero audience, until after more than a decade, 'the right people' took notice and spread the music globally.
discovering Wandelweiser was revelatory for me, i loved how much there was to explore, with accessible entry-points and persistently challenging music further down, most made far away from public attention. when I experienced this scene first-hand, I was surprised to find what I expected might be a strictness to the music was, for Antoine at least, more like a relationship with time, listening and performance that placed full trust in the humanity and generosity of everyone involved. it had to do with the idea of presence and commitment as gifts. one key idea of Antoine's I always think about is that if you are wishing there were more people at your show, you're in some way ignoring the gifts of everyone who did show up - even if that's just the players.
I think this helped Tone List. I mean, there really was no one at the gigs for ages, in a way that seems hard to think about looking at a sold-out room at AE. but I think that commitment to each other's work and our friendship above anything else was paramount. we were further encouraged by Jim Denley, and each other, to try to make music that actually made sense here, patiently trying to discover what that was. Franz Hautzinger, a visitor to the second AE in 2018, heard a group of us youngun's all improvise and said something to the effect of: you're all listening, so in five years its going to be amazing. its not for me to say, but it does feel like that is when things started to click into place somewhat
