This story is about Checkers #A2066646 originally from North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. Checkers was an 8 year old senior dog who waited over 6 months for a forever family and was set to be euthanized in September 2023 due to his skin issues. Checkers clearly didn’t have the best life, he had huge chunks missing out of both of his ears and red patches all over his body. Despite his past, Checkers was extremely sweet.

On his last day, volunteers gave him treats, took him out for a final run in the yard and said goodbye before they put him in his kennel. Thirty minutes before his euthanasia deadline, Woofy Acres, run by Dianne Bedford (then a partnered “New Hope” rescue), pulled him. Everyone was overjoyed that he was going to make it out alive.

Unfortunately in February 2024 I found out Woofy Acres had dumped many dogs at a local San Gabriel Valley kennel and abandoned them. I immediately thought of Checkers and messaged everyone I could to see if he was there but sadly he wasn’t. No one knew what happened to him.

Months went by, and I couldn’t shake off the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Today I received devastating news: Checkers had been part of a massive hoarding situation at Woofy Acres’ property in Piñon Hills. He had already been euthanized at Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino, CA. Checkers was skin and bones, starved, and living in appalling conditions. I will not rest until justice is served for Checkers and all the innocent dogs who suffered at the hands of these despicable individuals.

Checkers, you may be gone, but your memory will live on, and your story will serve as a reminder of the failures of the shelter system and the cruelty of humans who were supposed to care of you. I will forever regret not fighting harder for Checkers, but I will continue to fight for justice in his honor. Sadly there are many other victims who are still waiting to be rescued at the Devore Animal Shelter. Please share his story. taken in Friends of North Central Shelter - Los Angeles Animal Services by @journeyswithjagger

Update: adopted

Rex is scheduled to be euthanized if he is not saved before his October 18th EOD deadline.

I recently shared Rex because I knew that he needed help but unfortunately his situation has become urgent after he was given a deadline and now we have to find him a new home fast before it’s too late.

I found out that the people who surrendered him are actually his second owners after he was left behind by his original owners. His second owners only had him for about a year and a half but they had many good things to say about Rex such as: he is potty trained, he did well with their 5 year old, and that he is very calm. They also said that they kept him inside and that he is crate-trained/sleeps in his crate. Unfortunately, they prioritized their other dog over him and surrendered him for that reason.

Honestly I’m shocked that this dog has been abandoned twice in his life. He is essentially the perfect German shepherd in my eyes and while I do appreciate his recent owners for taking him in when he was left behind the first time, he doesn’t deserve to be discarded like this just because he’s growing older.

Please SHARE Rex so we can help him find a new home before it’s too late. This dog has so many wonderful qualities about him and he would be an amazing companion. He only has until the end of this Sunday to make it out.

Rex is now scheduled to be euthanized if he isn’t saved before Sunday, October 18th

Rex’s owners gave him up to the shelter and cited the other pet at the home as the reason.

This boy is actually very wonderful and he seems to be fully potty trained and knows many commands. He also really loves playing fetch too ❤️

I can’t imagine giving up on a dog that gave me 7 wonderful years of loyalty and joy no matter any circumstance.

Please SHARE Rex so we can find a lovely home for him! Come meet him at North Central Animal Shelter 🙌

She came in on a property hold with her newborn puppies but no one ever came to get her back. Now she lays here on the hard cement all day without her puppies and probably feels more alone than ever.

Algeria is obviously very nervous at the shelter. She chooses to lay down and not move wherever she goes and seemingly shows no hope. And of course, now that her puppies are weaned and will all eventually be adopted, she will be the only one left behind without anyone ever knowing her story.

If anyone wants to give a sweet mom another chance, I will list her information down below. She just needs some time once she’s out of the shelter. I’m sure that she will open up.

Update: ADOPTED

Achilles #A2290302 is set to be euthanized at North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. This sweet 2-year-old Labrador mix needs a foster or adopter by Tuesday, September 22, at 4 pm, or he will lose his life for being anxious and scared.
Achilles arrived as a stray on August 19th, then developed stomach issues and spent ten days in quarantine. Staff observed him “frozen and shaking” and were concerned that he wasn’t eating. Once he was finally able to interact with volunteers, he was nervous at first but soon showed off his darling, goofy, puppy-like personality and beautiful smile. He loves playing fetch and soaking up affection.
Around other dogs, Achilles has been described as gentle and dainty, mingling well in playgroups. Unfortunately, he weighed 60 pounds upon arrival but was recently listed as underweight at just 48 pounds. It’s obvious that Achilles is a sensitive soul struggling in an overwhelming environment where he can never feel safe.
Please share his story, pledge support if you can, foster, or adopt today. Black dogs are too often overlooked, and Achilles deserves to be seen and saved.

**Please DM @friendsofnorthcentralshelter with any questions or interest in helping to save him.

What a feeling it is to have a neglected dog open up to you like this 🙌

Tamale came in to the shelter as an evidence case after he was found abandoned in a home. He looked to be neglected as well as he was very thin and unkempt upon intake but thankfully he’s doing much better now.

I just don’t understand why anyone would mistreat him. He’s fun, smart, playful, and clearly affectionate. I guess people just don’t know when they have a good thing in front of them.

We are truly so lucky to have such faithful and loving companions with us in this world.

Here is Tamale’s info in case anyone is interested in adopting or fostering 🙏 The shelter is holding an Adventure Buddy Day event today so please ask about him if that’s something you’re interested in doing!

Mark has been in foster care for the last couple months getting a taste of the good life!☀️
Now what he needs is a forever home - DM us to inquire! Let’s help our shelter dogs get all the way home❣️

Volunteers and staff were so grateful when a foster stepped up for Mark! Mark waited nearly 8 months at the shelter and was Urgent Alerted in early July due to kennel stress after his long stay. Thank you fosters!💛

Since being in foster care, Mark has settled into home life quite easily! He is crate trained and house trained. He has been taking classes with @larpbo, working on leash and obedience training in a group setting. He’s a smart boy who already knows paw, sit, and wait. His foster shares that “he’s super friendly and the best cuddle buddy, but can seem shy when you first meet him. He’s super treat oriented and loves to eat about anything except carrots.”
No carrots for Mark! Haha.

Mark is a 2 year old, energetic boy who would love to find a forever home with an active person who enjoys training and outdoor activities with their dog! He’s the perfect sidekick for all those SoCal adventures!
He enjoys going for long walks and he LOVES the pool- so a doggy pool for him would be a win too!🐬

At the shelter, Mark was a regular in playgroups where he was a high energy, pushy player who could need slowing down. He may do well in a home with another tolerant dog who can match his energy.

✅DM us @friendsofnorthcentralshelter to connect with Mark’s foster and see if he might be the boy for you! Can’t adopt- Please Share!

Mark (ID #A2245365)
2 yrs, 55lbs, neutered

Mark is fostered in Los Angeles, CA through @laanimalservices

Update: rescued

My friend Samson needs someone to come for him asap 💔

Samson is a soulful seven year old German Shepherd who has been euthanasia listed for TOMORROW (Thursday, September 10th End of Day). His sorrowful barks grabbed my attention early on but only recently have I had the pleasure of meeting this boy. He embodies all the attributes that I love about the breed like their intelligence, charm, and drive.

When he was first brought to the shelter back in June, everyone had nothing but good things to say about him. He did well out with volunteers and he did well in playgroup. As time went on, however, he remained his sweet, friendly self with people but he started to become more aroused in playgroup. That is what months of being in a cage does to such a smart and sensitive dog like Samson.

Most recently, this arousal in playgroup resulted in a dog fight between him and another male. It should be noted that he was also very tolerant of a pushy 11 month old male puppy in a different session and that the reason for his euthanasia is premised on his arousal surrounding playgroup. He has not shown concerning behavior during solo outings with volunteers. At any rate, I suggest that whoever is seeking to help Samson have experience or support for dealing with such behavior.

Update: RESCUED waiting for more details

Samson #A2275804 has been chosen to die soon at North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. This magnificent 7-year-old German Shepherd boy will be euthanized unless a foster or adopter steps in by Thursday, September 10th at 4 pm, because he’s overwhelmed and scared. Since arriving as a stray on May 30th, Samson has waited for someone to notice him. Volunteers say he is a tender softie with the biggest grin, a love for treats and fetch, and a passion for swimming in the pool.
His initial playgroups with other dogs described him as gentle, dainty, low-energy, tolerant, and anxious. He mingled and was steerable. Sadly, Samson is now declining, causing him to react at the fence, stand his ground and become harder to redirect, and his struggle could soon cost him his future. He urgently needs a responsible, Shepherd-experienced foster or adopter who can offer the care, patience and stability he deserves to finally heal and thrive.
Please share Samson’s story immediately and consider pledging support if you can. It isn’t fair that he should lose his life because no one was willing to take a chance on him.

**Please DM @friendsofnorthcentralshelter with any questions or interest in helping to save Samson.

Gentle seniors should not be in shelters 💔

Poor distinguished man Scrappy was adopted from North Central back in Jan 2024. He must have been happy thinking that all of his troubles were over, but sadly that was not the case. Fast forward almost 3 years later he arrived back the shelter as a possible owner. And his family never came for him 😔

We love Scrappy. He's a spunky dude who loves to play with toys of all types or chomping on a ball. His initial bursts of energy usually subside quickly and he sploots in the grass happily lounging. He's been a friendly boy who seems to enjoy butt scratches. He was even introduced to a potential adopter who had a child and was noted to not pay much attention to the young kid until they offered him treats which he accepted. And volunteers think this sweet man is even housebroken ⭐️

Scrappy has been in many playgroups, initially noted to be stiff but he is now described to be social, even playful at times and can mingle.

This senior is in need of someone caring & committed❣️
If might be able to give Scrappy a soft bed, whether that's as a foster or adopter, come meet him! Or DM us about him. Please also Share him to help get eyes on this lovely man.

ADOPTED!

Maverick #A2082870 is set to lose his life at North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. If he is not adopted or fostered by Wednesday, September 2nd at 4 pm, this one-of-a-kind 5-year-old Shepherd mix will be euthanized after the family he trusted abandoned him.
Formerly known as Mavis, Maverick arrived on August 5th because his owners were moving somewhere with pet restrictions and could not take him. They said he was originally adopted from Grand Forks, North Dakota, about four years ago. His surrender notes reported that he is friendly, outgoing, house-trained, and crate trained.
Maverick loves toys, bacon, and Milk-Bones, but can sometimes be dominant around other dogs. Volunteers describe him as extremely cute, playful, and sweet, always greeting people with his big, beautiful, happy smile. Maverick prefers human attention in playgroup and seems uncomfortable with other dogs. He appears anxious, often keeps to himself, and can be selective.
Because of these struggles, he has been chosen to die, with very little time left for someone to notice him. Maverick is scared and overwhelmed by a situation he cannot understand. All he needs is a kind, compassionate person willing to give him the opportunity to blossom and thrive.
Please share, pledge, foster, or adopt Maverick before he is gone forever.

**Please DM @friendsofnorthcentralshelter with any questions or interest in helping to save him.
