Flight Chief Maddox & Guidon Bearer Hickman

Starting from Day 0, I walked into Basic Training with one goal, and that was to graduate, but little did I know that this 8 week experience would show me so much. It taught me a whole new world of leadership, discipline, and introduced me to one of the most amazing, hard working individuals I've ever met.

Me and Rashaud Maddox walked into BMT with similar goals, and from the first day our MTI's noticed our drive and commitment to serving others and leading. Early in our training, he was chosen to be our flight's Flight Chief, and I was chosen to be the Guidon Bearer, and when our likeness came together, we were an inseparable powerhouse. Whether it was leadership, PT, consistency, service, how we presented ourselves—it didn't matter—we chose to lead from the front with humility and with 200% of ourselves—service before self, and excellence in all we did.

The first few weeks hit like a truck, but we saw a drive in each other and decided to go at it together despite the circumstances. During a rare down time in Week 1, He and I came together and swore that from that day onward we would be each other's wingmen, and that bond hasn't broken ever since. We laughed, ran, joked, pushed each other, and even got injured around the same time (BOTH OF US WERE ON CRUTCHES 😂😭 forward crutch, march). We had our good days and bad, and most days were harder than any of us would like to admit, but regardless we stuck by one another.

We set goals for each other—maxxing out our PT scores, scoring high on our final exam, aiming for M16 marksman, and marching and leading in sync, all to a point where we operated at a level that went beyond verbal communication and coordination.

I pushed through 2 months of sacrifice, hard work and dedication, coming out with a fresh perspective on life as a whole, and I wouldn't have made it through without my Flight Chief by my side. Rashaud I couldn't thank you more brother, for uplifting me in hard times, and pushing me to be my best all day everyday.

Closing this chapter with a full heart. I know, without a doubt, that God has an amazingly beautiful story unfolding for me next. It's time to turn the page and step into it.

It was a true blessing and a great privilege to have been chosen to give the benediction for our graduation. 🤍

🇺🇸 Today was a powerful day of honor and gratitude as we gathered to celebrate our veterans. Standing alongside our MCJROTC Color Guard, the Jacket Pride Wind Ensemble, and our choir, we aimed to convey the depth of respect we hold for each veteran’s courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. Through song, through ceremony, and through remembrance, we thank those who have selflessly served, protecting the very freedoms we hold dear. May we never forget the weight of their sacrifices and the legacy of service they leave behind.

God bless everyone, and God bless America. 🤍

✈️ I have officially sworn into the Air Force National Guard, staring out as an A1C (Airman First Class, E-3). I have been incredibly blessed by every walk of life leading up to this moment, and I pray that the Lord walks with me as I enter the uncertain times ahead. I know He has a beautifully made plan for my life, and I’m excited to see what He has in store for me.

Thank you to all who have supported me during this process that took around a year. I couldn’t ask for better friends or family to share this experience with.

Thank you to my recruiter, TSgt Smith, for your patience and perseverance throughout this process. I will always be grateful for your service—both for your country and for me.

Thank you to my family, within my house and abroad. Without any of you, and the grace of God, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Thank you to Spencer and Mrs. Chasity for coming on such short notice, I truly appreciate y'all.

And thank you to my minister, Nathan Iblings, for always supporting me, praying for and over me, leading me in my faith, and for always being here for me through it all. Thank you to all who came.

JV signing out 💜💛 As this marching season comes to a close, I already know how much I’ll miss all of you. These past four years have been a time like no other—filled with growth, resilience, and connection with such loving and extraordinary people. I wouldn’t trade these moments for anything else. Together, we’ve built something truly special, something that goes beyond performances and competitions. It’s about the friendships, the laughter, the challenges, and the unforgettable memories that will stay with us forever.

Take it all in. Breathe in every moment. Before you know it, this chapter will pass in a flash, and you’ll wish for just one more chance to relive it. These years have been a blessing, and I’m endlessly grateful to have shared them with all of you.

Part Five: Yesterday, we visited the Kennedy Center and listened to a prestigiously professional orchestra play Tristan und Isolde & The Poem of Ecstacy, a Concerto, and Dvorák played by Alban Gerhardt, a very skilled cello player (who played everything by memory). The orchestra was conducted by Karina Canellakis, delivering an immersive 90+ minute experience.

Overall, our Washington DC trip was an amazing getaway, and I got to experience so many new things with such a wonderful group of people. The year's coming to a close very fast, so it was nice to have a final oorah with the Jacket Pride Band. 🐝 taken in KennedyCenter by @jovanhickman_
