“Softer Than I Seem”

A tech-effigy ode to a shell that I’ve built around myself, a (mostly) unfeeling cyborg constructed from the vestiges of my cishet identity. In middle school I was bullied and isolated for unknowingly embodying who I was — a neurodivergent trans kid. I constructed a hypermasculine identity to protect that unmasked self. Lifting weights and building a larger frame, playing football for years (a sport I completely despise), and tailoring my social identity towards being a physically imposing caricature of Black masculinity. It wasn’t until late 2019 that I began to make my way back to my true self. I will forever be on that journey, but I’m much closer to that kid than I was years ago. by @joxacto
