self-portrait titled “angels are my audience” (2021) 16” x 20” handmade collage on canvas, watercolor x acrylic x gel pen

this collage is many things - a visual memoir, a dialogue on current events, the blurring between my spiritual awakenings and my episodes of mental illness - above all, it’s an assurance that i’m protected, and always will be.

“harlem re:naissance” (2020) 16” x 20” handmade collage on canvas

This piece centers Black queer artists and performers from the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. As Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates once said, the Harlem Renaissance was ‘as gay as it was Black’. Performances from this time should be seen as a radical act - a disruption of normative expectations on our bodies, our gender, our artistry. Black queer Harlem fought for the freedom to express itself so that we can defy those same expectations today.

Featured in this piece: Richmond Barthe, Lucille Bogan, Gladys Bentley, Countee Cullen, Alexander Gumby, Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes, Alain Locke, Claude McKay, Florence Mills, Richard Bruce Nugent, Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, Bessie Smith, Wallace Thurman, and Ethel Waters. taken in Harlem, New York City by @shatteredprisms

BLACK PANT(HERS) (2020) 20” x 16” handmade collage on canvas

A continuation of the “US, NOT JUST YOU” series, positioned within the context of the Black Panther Party. Male Black nationalists adopted “a form of hypermasculinized Black Power politics” that obscured the markedly impactful leadership of Black women in the Party (Greene). This piece was created to elevate and recognize the foundational work that these women brought to the movement. On my forthcoming website, shatteredprisms.com, you will be able to interact with each of their faces and learn more about their legendary contributions.

Featured in this collage: Afeni Shakur, Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Barbara Easley Cox, Charlotte Hill O’Neal, Claudia Williams, Delores Henderson, Elaine Brown, Ericka Huggins, Fredricka Newton, J. Yasmeen Sutton, Joan Bird, Joyce Lee, Joyce Means, Kathleen Cleaver, Mary Ann Carlton, Paula Hill, and Rosemari Mealy. by @shatteredprisms

“POLITICAL THEATER” (2020)
paper collage/digital background

Every individual depicted here is complicit in orchestrating a facade of progress, in constructing an image of American exceptionalism. This power-mad ruling class would rather dish out performative gestures than bring radical, transformative change. When you collapse party divisions, you understand that they are all maintaining a patriarchal, white supremacist, capitalist imperialist settler colonial state. Fuck your 4th of July, abolish America. by @shatteredprisms

“DIS(FACE)MENT” (2020)

Featured in this collage are key actors in the Bay Area housing crisis, centering Oakland. Google, Facebook, Visa, Wells Fargo, Target, Panera Bread, Starbucks and their CEOS are all guilty of facilitating Bay Area gentrification and the displacement of Black and Brown communities. These are the most profitable companies in the area, and they play a huge part in the present construction of “Silicon Valley”. They have built offices, factories, stores and the like that have produced an inaccessible, inequitable, even hostile environment for Bay Area natives. Their corporate investments are unethical, as they take space and belonging away from the communities that created Bay Area culture. Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf perpetuates these injustices by allowing inaffordable housing to spring up across the city, consigning low-income folks who are native to the area to the streets. by @shatteredprisms
