From this week’s facilitation space on “Feminist Solidarities During War”, organized by @knowledge_workshop 🌻

I sat with 10 remarkable women who in different ways, carried responsibilities since the 2024 war on Lebanon that far exceeded what should ever be asked of individuals in times of war.

Together, we traced how the war has lived in their bodies and minds, and how it has shaped their understandings of: dignity in moments of displacement and profound grief…the agency of those they cared for under conditions of uncertainty…belonging across communities suddenly brought into intimate contact…identity beyond clichés and inherited political narratives…responsibility towards ourselves and others…and care as a daily political practice, with all its possibilities, limits, and insane contradictions…

We also reflected on, and stood witness to each other’s stories of displacement, fear, anger, grief, privilege, and obligation, and to the ways these experiences continue to live within us.

Above all, it was a tender and brave space.

For a few hours…ten women carried each other’s stories alongside their own, and spoke of things that are easier to leave unspoken. The way they met one another with remarkable generosity and care left me filled with courage, and deeply humbled by their knowledge and trust. 🌿 by @joya.elias

A small offering for friends who love to think about land knowledge, ecology, community, and the futures that become possible when people govern with the land not on top of it…🌿

Over the past months, I worked with the wonderful team at @badaelsy on designing and analyzing a series of simulation games with farming communities in rural Hama, Syria. Together, we co-authored a paper that emerged from this process: Between Scarcity and Decision (👆🏼).

The project began with a question: how do farming communities make decisions after decades of marginalization, displacement, environmental pressure, and war?

What we found was that conversations about water were actually conversations about relationships. Discussions about crops and pests were discussions about trust, participation, authority, and power.

Beneath questions of agriculture sat deeper questions about the invisible infrastructures that allow communities to endure, organize, adapt, and repair.🫂

The paper explores how environmental challenges, social fragmentation, and local governance intersect in everyday political realities, and what this can teach us about resilience, collective action, and the futures communities are trying to build despite immense constraints.

Immense gratitude to Badael for creating the political and intellectual conditions that make this kind of work possible, and for continuing to insist that knowledge can be rigorous, always locally rooted, and deeply human but not anthropocentric at the same time.

Leaving you with a passage from the paper:

“Agriculture cannot be reduced to the production of food. It is a relationship between people, between people and the land, between the past they carry within them and the future they are trying to reach. From within that relationship, a different kind of peace becomes possible: one that returns with every season, deepens with every piece of knowledge preserved, grows through collective decisions, and flourishes wherever people continue tending to one another and to the land beneath their feet.” 🌿 by @joya.elias
