“Five canceled tickets in one week, over 4000€ worth of flights gone. The airport feels like an evacuation zone. I feel like I’m being ripped away from a place I never want to leave. If it weren’t for obligations pulling me back, there’d be nothing dragging me out of Lebanon in these times. There’s nothing harder than having to choose: leave and be your loved ones’ safety net, or stay and suffer the same consequences as everyone else, but at least we’re all in it together. That’s the truth, the sad truth for many who don’t want to leave but cannot stay. I had to pack and leave in just four hours. I didn’t have time to say goodbye to my father and brothers. Thinking of my grandmother and the rest of my family and friends I didn’t have time to say goodbye to, not knowing when I’ll be able to fly in and see next.
Listening to everyone speak around me at the airport, I realize everyone is leaving for different reasons: work, families, obligations abroad, or simply because they’re privileged enough to have dual citizenship. Privilege all around. I’m thinking of everyone who doesn’t have that privilege and have to suffer the consequences of another round of senseless violence.

So many emotions are swirling in me, emotions I need to cry out.

I’m writing this while waiting for boarding to finish on my flight. Two loud bangs echo while boarding. There’s panic among the youngsters on the plane, while the adults understand it might be sonic booms from fucking Israeli planes breaking sound barriers, and they try to keep their children calm and functional to finish boarding. Our hearts are ripped open. Fuck everyone and everything making us live, and leave, like this.

Meet Joya Elias from Beirut, Lebanon. She is a young and very talented activist with a legal background, who is consistently advocating for human rights. This can be seen in her engagement with the committee “Taharrak”, meaning ‘take action’ in Arabic: “At the wake of the Lebanese revolution, I was surprised by how little people know about their civil and political rights. As the government started using arbitrary violence to suppress demonstrations, I realized that the only way to challenge this violence is by spreading knowledge.” When I asked her about feminism in the Middle East she replied: “Feminism cannot be imported, it has to be created. And this is what we have lately come to realize at the wake of the Lebanese revolution, we are breaking a lot of stigma and taboo around these coercively imposed norms that have been oppressing women for decades. But we are so elegantly doing so by revisiting the values of our society without infringing upon individual freedoms.” Swipe to read more!
