It’s easy, living in a city, to feel cut off from nature’s abundance, especially during the winter. we’re lucky that there’s a tradition passed through generations of how to bottle up summer’s gifts for cold and flu season: elderberry syrup.

harvest berries once they’ve gone dark purple, almost black (and leave lots for birds!). or buy some at your local herb store. not to be consumed raw, but delicious once processed.

Nancy Phillips’ (@heartsongfarm.nh) full recipe below, from @rosemarygladstar’s class in @ecoversity’s 100 Hour Herbalism Program - use code JUNGL for $350 off tuition 🌿

INGREDIENTS

2 quarts of fresh ripe elderberries or
1 quart of dried
¼ cup water
¼ oz grated ginger
½ tsp cloves
Raw honey (See recipe for measurement)
*Optional: ½ cup dried elder flowers
or ½ cup of Echinacea root

HOW-TO

1. Simmer your herbs covered by 4 inches of water in a large soup pot for 1-3 hours until soft. Strain out the pulp and reserve the liquid.

2. Add ¼ ounce freshly grated ginger and ½ teaspoon of cloves to the liquid
and simmer uncovered until the liquid reduces to half the volume. Add one
part raw honey to one part concentrated tea. Bottle and cap when cool.

3. Please note: This ‘low sugar’ syrup must be kept refrigerated and used within twelve weeks. Optional: You can add ½ cup dried elderflowers to the hot juice, put the lid on and infuse for 20 minutes more. Then strain herbs out of the syrup and proceed with the honey.

4. I’ve used this recipe using both dried and fresh berries and the syrup has turned out, if not quite as delicious, still better tasting and more effective than most store-bought remedies for colds/flu.

enjoy! 🧚‍♀️ by @joyofthejungl

in the week leading up to my session with Kara from @deep.root.connections, I spent a lot of time sitting with my tree, feeling into what else wanted to be asked.

on the morning of, I went out to connect with my tree more time, and 2 additional questions came to me:

1. I realize I’ve been referring to you in the feminine, but is that how you identify?

2. I have a feeling I’m meant to turn one of your branches into a wand…would you like that?

right off the bat on our call (without me saying anything), Kara shared with me that she likes to refer to the trees as they would like to be presented, and that my tree was wanting to come forward as the masculine. so that’s why you’ll notice Kara saying “he” throughout the video

and as for the second question about the wand…I’ll let the video speak for itself on that one. again, I didn’t mention anything about it to her, so you can imagine my full body chills when the idea of wand was brought up!!! by @joyofthejungl

tick PSA!!!

we’re up at a cottage & have seen 10+ ticks in the last few days on our clothing, dog, dog bed, door mat, and unfortunately, burrowing into our legs.

we went for a trail walk and thought that as long as we stuck to the path the whole time we would be fine - we were not. It was a wide path & we didn’t even brush any plants/tall grass, yet they still found their way on to us…and this is in late July, which is supposably a low season for ticks :/

we’re in the Rideau Lakes region of Ontario, where tick populations have been surging - apparently they thrive on the climate change induced warmer/longer summers.
an area close to us was tested in 2014 & scientists found that almost 80% of ticks were infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease.

the probability that an infected tick will give you Lyme Disease increases with the length of time that it is attached to you, so check for ticks often!!! and check carefully: I cannot stress how small the nymph tick on me was…and they think around 50% of Lyme Disease cases come from nymphs.

carry tweezers with you so you can properly remove ticks from your body (grasp the head as close to the skin as possible and slowly pull straight out, try not to twist or squeeze).

If you do find a tick on you, do some research on Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, etc. so you know what to look out for and when to see a doctor.

*many of the clips in this video were NOT taken in ticky areas. before you go frolicking/forest bathing anywhere, check online to see if the area you’re in has ticks*

these are scary times but we’ve gotta be diligent & stay healthy to fight this fight together 💚
