Early Bird: about a very early solitary walk…moved by the feeling of being in this wide open space, giddy from looking up at the sky; excited by the incoming weather. They all mean a lot, but this one especially so…

‘Spent the afternoon gazing at this amazing painting!
Rembrandt: Self-portrait in a Feathered Bonnet 1635

Currently at National Trust Upton House in Warwickshire, and on a national tour…really worth seeing.

Jo York’s on a roll after yesterday’s post.

With Jo’s darker canvass here, hanging at the front of the gallery, the largest painting by Jo that we have witnessed, I am transported back in time to the Romantic period, specifically to the artwork of Casper David Friedrich
.

Both artists’ communion with the sublimity and solitude of nature seems to reflect & focus on vast empty spaces (horror vacui), and emotional longing for a union with nature.

I did warn you that we had some mightily impressive artwork that has arrived in the Gallery this weekend! And it being the Keswick Convention, you might like to bring with you a monk to view this painting on the easel?
.
I don’t know if this is deliberate or serendipitous, but the two Jo York paintings in the front of the window, seem to be almost referencing CDF’s two, 1808-1810 Romantic companion masterpieces in the ⁠Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
.
Not only do you need not to travel to Berlin, but both of Jo’s impressive, evocative paintings are available to both view and purchase here in Keswick.

A huge amount of new artwork has arrived in the Gallery in the last 48 hours, and I’m going to add some images and insight into some of the beautiful pieces currently newly hanging in the Gallery
.
For those who have been arriving all day, apologies, you’ve had to step over step ladders, step over people, step over plinths, step over paintings awaiting to be hung!

these four @joyorkart paintings, evocative, have already been admired, and photographed by visitors

Jo has brought in some far larger pieces which I will show you in the coming days.

So this one is finished…all about tranquility in a World that feels so far from peaceful. Painting is a funny thing, sometimes I think you paint the things you need.

It probably wasn’t the cleverest thing to get back into painting on such a big scale ( it’s about 150cm x 122 cm), but then again it’s taken months to make and literally given me the space and time to get properly back into work again. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea after all!

‘Leave a Story Untold’
Built up in a great many opaque and glazed layers on a lovely deep canvas, and then hand finished with burnished cold wax for a bit of a glow.

I’m looking out at the garden which is so dried out from a mix of heat and wind…it could do with some of this water right now!

Had such a lovely trip over to see ‘Materiality’ @little_buckland_gallery yesterday…so sorry to have missed the opening, but such a beautifully curated show, and a real feast for the eyes!

Just a quick post in praise of @compton_verney …we are so lucky to live down the road, and it’s an amazing place!
Great events like the recent #potfest ceramics fair, and beautiful grounds to explore with lakes, sculpture and wildflower meadows.
Wonderful permanent collections, including Chinese Bronzes, and amazing exhibitions like Bruegel to Rembrandt-
This show closes at the end of the month…I think we’ve been about 5 times now!
It’s all well worth a visit if you get a chance!

It’s been a slow road back to painting…after an enforced break (caused by trying to move and things falling through and all my kit being in storage over an extended period). My Dad was an artist, and was always terrified if he couldn’t work for a while; scared that he would have somehow forgotten everything…I’ve been pretty scared too, once we’d built the studio, and I finally had a bit of time clear from house sorting stuff, I think I was a bit lost; unsure of what to do or how to do it. I’ve coached so many artists through the same sort of thing, but it doesn’t make it any easier when it’s you that’s struggling.

Anyway I took my own advice, showed up and painted. I messed around in my sketchbook, went back over loads of old painting journals, and just kept painting…this week is the first time it has started to feel right again. Mind you this big one has been re-gessoed multiple times! Fingers crossed I’m getting there now, and if you’re struggling at the moment, keep at it:) Jo x

We are very lucky to live close to @compton_verney …at the moment they have an exceptional exhibition of Dutch and Flemish Art, and today was our 3rd or 4th visit. I love having the freedom to dip in and out of exhibitions, returning at different times, and noticing completely different things. Today was perfect; we were there in the last hour before closing and had the exhibition almost to ourselves…what an absolute privilege to be able to gaze in awe at these beautiful subtle drawings!
