As Happy as Sad is Blue

“Virtually unclassifiable, it centers on noir-ish circus-type music, ambient instrumental pieces that are darker and edgier than the genre might suggest, beautiful pastoral passages, tango-like interludes, and other elemental musics that cannot be quantified in written language.”
Upon release, AMG described the album as “… Underground music, Outsider Art at its best…”
Recorded onto 4-track cassette in a cellar by candlelight.

First time ever on vinyl for the 1999 debut album by cult Melbourne outfit, Hungry Ghosts. Originally released on CD on the Reliant label and produced by Rowland S. Howard (Birthday Party/Young Charlatans/need we say more?), it sounded like a band from another place and time. Nominally thrown into the ‘post-rock’ sphere, the Hungry Ghosts brought so much more to the table than such restrictive terms may imply.
Featuring an eclectic array of percussive and stringed instruments, with some brass thrown in for good measure, the band created its own world of expressive instrumental music that played like a lost European film soundtrack.
Soon after its release, the group made their way to the US to record for Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth)’s Smells Like label, and the story continues from there.
This 2LP edition features the debut full-length CD on vinyl for the very first time, as well as their debut self-released (and -titled) EP from two years earlier.
Inside is an informative 4-page booklet with extensive liner notes telling the Hungry Ghosts story.

Looking back that was a pretty cool time - starting something new on my own, no expectations and no pressure, with JP bringing his distinctive musicianship to the songs.

Hi everyone, I’m excited to announce a national tour celebrating the 15th anniversary of my self-titled debut album, released in 2011 — a record that kickstarted my solo career.

I’ll be joined by my good friend and original collaborator @jp_shilo and we’ll be playing the album in full. We haven’t done this in a very long time and I’m really looking forward to it. There’ll be a few extra surprises in the set too.

The album was produced by the late Dean Turner, one of the most important people in my life and whose belief, guidance and support helped make not only the record but my solo career possible. It feels really special to be marking this chapter fifteen years on. ❤️

I’m also thrilled that @mushroommusic and I are bringing the album back into the world with a limited edition vinyl reissue. It’s available to pre-order now and will be released on August 7.

Thanks to everyone who’s travelled with these songs over the years. I can’t wait to celebrate with you.

There’s more to come too — I’ll be sharing a few special things along the way as we count down to the shows, so stay tuned.
