POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My first introduction to The Blackeyed Susans was via my uncle David. He bought me a copy of their All Souls Alive LP when it came out in 1993. It had a huge impact on me at the time and would go on to shape the course of my career in the years to come.

I got to see The Susans in my teens and was always blown away by the calibre and energy of their shows. They truly were a supergroup to behold. Equal parts @thetriffids & @therealdirtythree all rolled into one.
By the late ‘90s I got to support the Susans in my own band Hungry Ghosts at The Continental Cafe in Prahran.
What a dream.
Fast forward a decade and an invitation came from @robsnarski to fill in on guitar for a couple of shows, a tour that ended up lasting another decade and culminating in me co-writing songs for their last album Close Your Eyes and See.
In 2009 we supported @leonardcohen at a winery in the Yarra Valley and I had a very memorable one on one discussing the power of dreams with Leonard and reciting the Heart Sutra with him in Sanskrit in the afternoon sun. (…that’s another story for another post.)

Fast forward another decade and a half and the good folk at @eminentvinyl / @magneticsouthrecords (who recently pressed the Hungry Ghosts’ double LP) have released The Susans’ All Souls Alive on vinyl for the very first time. https://magneticsouth.com.au/products/all-souls-alive

Here’s a clip from the Close Your Eyes and See Album launch at the Vanguard in Sydney, (filmed by Cocteau’s Horses)
For the encore I got to lead the band in a Cohen classic - (which David McComb does on the All Souls Alive album.)

😌🎶 Thanks for the “Memories”

“Hungry Ghosts” …. i can’t tell you how much I adore this majestic, lustrous record.

Issued on vinyl by Eminent Vinyl/ @magneticsouthrecords for the first time ever, this is the 1999 debut album by cult Melbourne outfit, Hungry Ghosts. Originally released on CD on the Reliant label and produced by Rowland S. Howard (Birthday Party/Young Charlatans/Crime and The City Solution, These Immortal Souls), it sounded like a band from another place and time.

This 2LP edition features the debut full-length album as well as their debut self-released (and -titled) EP from two years earlier, plus is an informative four-page booklet with extensive liner notes telling the Hungry Ghosts story.

If Low, The Triffids, Sonic Youth, Bernard Hermann and MBV loom large in your listening , “Hungry Ghosts” will move you to your marrow.
You can secure a copy right now at Rocksteady Records.

Rightful respect to @bruce_san57 who first released the CD in the late 20th Century
