Most of my solo on @brandonwoody1 composition “Urge” | It was amazing to be a part of my guy’s big band debut as my first gig in Baltimore! 🙌🏾 The huge amount of soul in the room and seeing how deeply receptive the crowd was to the music was quite the experience, I was very grateful to see that! Appreciation to the bro @joshuawatkinsmusic for capturing this for me 🖤 #baltimoremusicscene #baltimorejazz #currentspacebaltimore taken in Current Space by @jpsoultrpt

Haha as many of you now know already, after a successful senior recital this past weekend, I will be attending graduate school this fall at Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University on a FULL TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP, studying with the master Sean Jones @seanyboymusic ✨

I am so tremendously grateful for this amazing opportunity and I can’t wait to bring more Detroit to Baltimore and further strengthen all facets of my career! My time at MSU has definitely allowed me to step in to this next level. 🙌🏾

More posts to come soon from my recital and graduation next weekend!! 💚🎓 taken in Michigan State University College of Music by @jpsoultrpt

Here’s a very short flugelhorn solo I actually like from last weekend’s insane back-to-back gig festivities at the @eljazzfest with the Jeff Haas Nonet on a nice tune by Jeff called “Look After Love”. #flugelhornsolo #elsummersolsticejazzfestival #msujazzstudies #jazzwaltz taken in Summer Solstice Jazz Festival by @jpsoultrpt

This will be a bit long and whether you read or not, I had to share this about my beloved mentor.

Rayse Biggs…

He was my first ever trumpet and jazz teacher when I came to the MSU Community Music School in Detroit (CMSD) when I was in the Spartan Youth Jazz Program. He was tough but so very encouraging and supportive of his students. He was one of my first personal influences and an example of what kind of artist/performer I was beginning to strive to be.

The last time I physically saw Rayse was sometime just before Covid when I was still at the beginning of learning to play and from that point on, after everyone had to separate from each other, I had heard news here and there that Rayse was struggling/not doing too well with his health/personal life. I wasn’t in the loop of course, so I never understood until recently the severity of what was happening over these past few years.

Back in early April, I got the sudden god given chance to see Rayse one last time and got to play for him when he was in hospice. It was an extremely bittersweet experience as that was the first time I had seen Rayse in so long. What was hitting me so hard in the moment was that he never got to really see any of my development and to play for him for the first time in his condition was something I won’t forget.
I’m not even fully sure if he remembered me but I hope a part of him did and could tell I had improved tremendously. I hope a part of him felt that I still looked up to him even now.

Rayse, thank you for being an example, a bridge to Detroit’s past legendary musicians, and an authentic artist. You will live through the lineage of trumpet players that I and others today carry with us from what was passed on. Detroit’s musical tradition is “Each One Teach One” and Rayse, I may not have understood everything you taught me then, but I do now and I can say that you taught me well.
Rest in peace Rayse. ❤️ #detroitmusicians #detroittrumpetplayers #raysebiggs #eachoneteachone #detroitjazz taken in Detroit, Michigan by @jpsoultrpt
