POSTS STORIES REELS

This year has been a wild ride. Maybe you’ve heard, but I started a mural painting business this Summer and it transformed my life in ways I would never imagine.

I applied to the Hertel Alley Mural festival last winter, thinking it would be a total long shot to be accepted. I’d never worked on a mural before and I had a batshit crazy idea of painting Muppet Godzilla invading Buffalo. Then I got an acceptance letter from @asiwny and I remember just triumphantly screaming in my car like a crazy person.

Right then and there I set a wicked high bar for myself to work on 6 murals and I didn’t care if they were mine or if I was assisting a lead artist realize their vision.

By the end of October I painted 2 murals of my own design and helped 5 amazing artists create 4 murals spread across western New York.

I want to sincerely thank the following artists for trusting me to work on their murals. You all helped change my life in the most amazing way. Please check out their work and give them a follow:

@driftmuralco
@sarahgeebee.art
@miss.birdy
@_emilyding
@aerosolkingdom

Also special shoutouts to @ahconsultingllc and everyone on the Paint CHQ Team. As well as @joelferoleto and @asiwny for organizing the Hertel Alley Mural Festival. Thank you to all the friends and family that came out to be my assistants, especially my brother who spent his birthday weekend helping me paint at Hertel! #mural #muralpainting

@dylancolefilms thank you for the photos! by @jriceart

I cannot express in words what an amazing experience the past few weeks has been apprenticing for the Paint CHQ Mural Festival.

Thank you to the artists @driftmuralco @aerosolkingdom @_emilyding and @miss.birdy - you were so kind and completely open with your knowledge and lived experiences as professional muralists. I will carry what I’ve learned from this opportunity into my own practice and we’ll paint again together soon!

I also want to thank @ahconsultingllc and @live_chq_ny for helping to bring these artists and their work into our neighborhoods. The impact of these murals will be felt for decades to come. Thank you! 🙏 by @jriceart

Thats a wrap on my first mural - Muppet Godzilla Invades Buffalo!

Thank you to all the friends and fam that came out to pitch in, @asiwny and @joelferoleto for organizing the Hertel Alley Mural fest!

I learned so much from this opportunity, and while it may have been my first mural and my first time using spray paint - it won’t be my last 😉 by @jriceart

Moodboards and thumbnails are the secret to starting a successful illustration. They also make pitching ideas to clients so much easier to get buy in.

I’m using Pinterest to find inspiring images and then Figma to hold all my collected reference, project sketches and notes.

I’ll often add annotations alongside my initial sketches to help convey mood, color, narrative and direction. Clients can even add their own notes directly to my sketches which helps to bring them into the initial planning phases.

Come down to @liftedjamestown at 2pm for the ribbon cutting ceremony for this mural that I painted in downtown Jamestown

There will be light refreshments and me holding a comically large pair of scissors

Also a great opportunity to refresh your supplies 😉 by @jriceart

Bucket lids and cheap glass picture frames make the best paint palettes 🎨 change my mind by @jriceart

This past weekend I was asked to join a group of plein air painters from Buffalo to paint at the private grounds of @arcosanti.springs during their open house of sorts.

The painters arrived a bit earlier before the rest of the patrons to tour the grounds and scout out painting locations. We wandered through the meadow and woods down to a slate rock creek bed. In the end, I decided to paint the barn that was rustic and inviting, a perfect place for a retreat or workshop. A string duo and guitarist each played sets which I listened to as I painted.

I worked in acrylic on canvas, starting out by sketching the big shapes while steadily adding more details like windows, sliding barn doors, and potted plants.

We were served a stellar little lunch of different artisan pizzas and yall, I probably had like 7 slices lol

After lunch we spent another hour working on our paintings and met again at the barn to have a little show of our work and chat with the attendees a bit. One of which decided to buy my painting so that was cool!

Thanks again to @buffalopleinair and Arcosant’i springs for having me and giving me the opportunity to experience a perfect fall day by @jriceart

Doing my part to support weird art!

My moshing days may be long over, but I’m glad to see the kids getting into some good trouble.

A peak into my weekend as a muralist and live painter.

Friday I went to portal at the Niagara Food Terminal which was an open house for a ton of the businesses, visited @openartsbuf for some costumed figure sessions and @untitled__studios to hang with some seriously talented artists

Saturday I worked on my mural over at @liftedjamestown stay tuned for when we announce the ribbon cutting ceremony for next week!

Sunday I rode the bike over to @panamarockspark for their foliage festival, caught up with some friends and painted @son.theband for the 5th time lol and soaked up the prime fall weather by @jriceart

Pearl City Alt Night Artist Spotlight:

Joe Rice is a muralist and live painter based in Jamestown, NY, known for realistically rendered, boldly colored work that often brings fictional characters to life. With a background in large-scale public art, he has led crews on murals across Western New York, working in spray paint and acrylic, and he moves just as easily between watercolor, oils, and mixed media in his studio practice. That range carries into digital, where he’ll be painting live at this showcase, creating a series of portraits of the performers as they take the stage. Whether on a wall, a canvas, or a screen, Joe captures the energy of the moment and turns it into finished work. You can find more of his work at joericeart.com and @jriceart.

Joe will be live painting October 8th at @secretundisclosed

48 degrees, a two-hour ride, and a farm full of artists. Perfect Saturday. 🏍️🎨

Rode my Triumph up to the Niagara Heritage Village for the Buffalo Urban Sketchers meetup, met Andy on his red Speed Twin, got distracted by Sazzle the cat, then painted the barn, chicken coop, and apple tree in watercolor.

The best part is the throwdown at the end, where everyone lays their work out. Same farm, completely different paintings.
