POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Six years and six days again Navy SEAL/Podcaster/Businessman Jocko Willink and his talented technician Echo Charles posted my first interview on Jocko Podcast # 180. It was the first of eight podcasts with Jocko, followed by Podcasts # 181, 182, 186 - with The Frenchman, 247, 248, 258 and 259. Then Jocko created and funded SOGCast podcasts, where I interviewed SOG operators, aviators who supported SOG teams running top secret missions in Laos, Cambodia & N. Vietnam during the Vietnam War, and family members of 58 SOG men still listed as Missing In Action, Green Berets lost during the secret war. Today, thanks to Jocko and Echo Charles, we have recorded 56 SOGCast interviews that are posted first on Apple and Spotify, before YouTube posting. I shall be eternally grateful to Jocko, Echo and Kerry for making all of this possible, doing more to bring SOG stories to viewers than any Army operation. In a word, thank you sir and thanks to your creative team that made it all happen. Airborne! by @jstrykermeyer

Another powerful piece of history, told through the eyes of MACV-SOG operator John Stryker Meyer. For decades, the true nature of the Vietnam War and the unspeakable challenges these men endured remained hidden from public view. Meyer served in one of the most dangerous and secretive units in military history, running recon missions deep behind enemy lines in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam—missions he couldn’t even speak about for over 20 years.

What they faced daily was beyond comprehension: relentless combat, torture if captured, and the ever-present shadow of death. And yet, returning home, many like John were met with silence. PTSD wasn’t acknowledged, and the pain was buried. by @jstrykermeyer

🇺🇸 THE GREAT JOE GALLOWAY INTERVIEWS TILT

In 2019, in San Diego, legendary war correspondent and author Joe Galloway sat down with John Stryker “Tilt” Meyer for an interview now preserved by the Library of Congress Veterans History Project.

Joe Galloway was much more than a reporter. He covered four tours in Vietnam for United Press International and co-authored We Were Soldiers Once… and Young with Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore, chronicling the Battle of Ia Drang. In 1998, Galloway received the Bronze Star with “V” device for valor for his actions rescuing wounded American soldiers under fire during that battle.

In this interview, the focus turns to Tilt — his experiences, his service, and his time with MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War.

These are the firsthand accounts that matter. The voices of the men who were there, sharing their experiences so future generations can learn about a chapter of history that must never be forgotten.

Thanks to the Library of Congress for preserving this conversation, and to Joe Galloway for documenting the stories of those who served.

Take the time to listen. It’s an important piece of history.

58 years ago – 5 October 1968.

A 9-man MACV-SOG recon team, ST Alabama, was deep in Laos when they made contact with an NVA force of 10,000 men.
The NVA general told Lynne it was 10,000 NVA!!!!
After the One-Zero was killed, Lynne M. Black Jr. took command. The team fought for their lives the entire day, outnumbered beyond belief, and still made it out.

During the all-day battle Lynne was wounded and knocked unconscious by a grenade which also destroyed this CAR-15!

That is the definition of a SOG recon legend.
Hear the full story straight from Lynne himself on SOGCast 027.

Fifty-eight years ago today, Oct. 5, a 9-man MACV-SOG Recon Team ST Alabama was on a mission in Laos when it came in contact with an NVA division of 10,000 enemy soldiers. Lynne M. Black Jr. became the team leader after the original team leader was killed in action. They were in direct contact with the enemy the entire day. The story is one of the classic SOG stories over the eight-year secret war conducted in Laos, Cambodia and N. Vietnam by Green Beret-led teams. In the end ST Alabama lost three men, the enemy officer later told Black that between the recon team, Air Force tactical air and Army and Marine Corps helicopter gunships, they inflicted 90% casualties on the enemy. So take a moment to salute the men of ST Alabama including Do Ti Quang and Khanh “Cowboy” Doan, who brought the remaining team back. You can read more about it in Lynne’s book Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and Across The Fence, The Secret War in Vietnam. by @jstrykermeyer

🇺🇸 DOUG GODSHALL

Another incredible portrait from Bonnie Cooper’s collection honoring the men who served in MACV-SOG.

Doug Godshall served with MACV-SOG in 1968–69, running reconnaissance missions with CCN from Phu Bai, Mai Loc, Danang and Ban Me Thuot.

After his time in SOG, Doug continued serving the Special Operations community, including six years as President of the Special Operations Association (SOA).

His story is featured in SOGCast Episode 019 — “Doug Godshall: Kicked Out, Then Runs SOG Recon.”

From being rejected from Special Forces training to eventually serving in one of the most secretive units of the Vietnam War, Doug’s story is one that deserves to be remembered.

Listen or watch Doug tell his story on SOGCast.

SOGCast 056: Just Another Day in SOG
with Robert “Bru” Taylor
In this episode of SOGCast, John “Tilt” Stryker Meyer sits down with Robert “Bru” Taylor, a MACV-SOG recon veteran who ran missions out of CCN. A powerful look at the courage, camaraderie, and quiet professionalism of the men who lived the Secret War.

🇺🇸 LTC Mike Taylor: 3.5 Years Untamed in MACV-SOG ⚡
Before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, Mike Taylor spent three and a half years in the shadows of the Vietnam War, serving from 1969 to 1972 in the military’s most highly classified covert ops unit.
From running hazardous cross-border recon with CCS and CCN to commanding the NKP Launch Site in Thailand, Taylor lived the SOG mission from both the ground and the air. As a FAC Rider, he routinely braved intense anti-aircraft fire over the Ho Chi Minh Trail to guide teams out of hot LZs.
For his unmatched valor, Taylor was awarded the Legion of Merit, 5 Bronze Stars (with “V” Device), and 2 Air Medals (with “V” Device).
Hear his incredible first-hand combat stories on SOGCast Episode 009 with John Stryker Meyer. 🎧

PATHS ONCE TAKEN — A Journey of Remembrance, Connection & Discovery

For those who served in Vietnam, some paths never really leave you.

The Special Operations Association Foundation is organizing a 10-day Vietnam experience for Vietnam-era Special Operations and Special Forces veterans, their families, and supporters.

From March 16–27, 2027, participants will have the opportunity to revisit historic locations and former military sites, take part in remembrance events, reconnect with fellow veterans, and experience the Vietnam of today.

Hanoi. Hoi An. Da Nang. Ho Chi Minh City. Ha Long Bay.

MACV-SOG — THE SECRET WAR

From 1964 to 1972, MACV-SOG conducted highly classified missions deep inside Laos and Cambodia.

Reconnaissance teams monitored enemy movement along the Ho Chi Minh Trail and carried out missions that included wiretaps, POW snatches, demolitions, Bright Light rescue missions and bomb-damage assessments.

These operations came at an enormous cost.

Green Berets, aviators and the indigenous soldiers who fought alongside them paid the price in a war that, for years, few people even knew existed.

John “Tilt” Stryker Meyer was there.

In this video, Tilt shares the history of MACV-SOG and the story behind the 2026 Legion Memorial Run N Gun, an event honoring the men who conducted these missions.
