Happy Deaf Awareness Month! 🤍🤟🏼

The silent film era is such an important part of Deaf history. So many Deaf artists contributed to the era, and their expressive body movements and facial expressions are a HUGE inspiration to how I approach my own artistry. :)

Nowww, I’m lucky to have so many amazing Deaf actors, directors, playwrights, and artists to look up to. Shoutout to everyone who has welcomed me with wisdom and open arms. I wouldn’t be where I am today without you!:
@ameliaxhensley , @castillejoshua , @sarahtubert , @kaiaterese , @treshelleedmond , @noah.a.buchholz , @and.morrill , @joeysiya , @joeycaverly , @deafplaywright and many more! :) Please check out their work!

Enjoy this video of “I Met A Girl” from Bells Are Ringing. I had the honor of performing it with Kyle (@kyledmorales). by @jsuemrtinez

I am so proud of this performance. This year taught me SOOO MUCH, not just about MT, but also about myself. I wanted to incorporate everything that I learned into this piece:

Music theory: changing the arrangement in the beginning.
Acting: finding my own voice (which is ASL!) that is meaningful and truthful to me.
Dance: storytelling through body language.

All of it built around a song that I very much connected to this year which is… “One Song Glory” from Rent with the amazing @braedoncarlton . I cannot wait for sophomore year! 😁😁😁 YAYYY! by @jsuemrtinez

Happy Disability Pride! 💙

Many people see Deafness as a barrier, but I see it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and challenge what is considered the “norm”, especially in a space that historically hasn’t been accessible to my Deafies. Thankfully, there are so many people working to change that, and the ASL Music Theory Lexicon is one of those efforts.

I wanted to showcase three signs I learned from the lexicon. This lexicon is developed by Christopher Tester and Christopher Bratten-Zappala in partnership with Deaf West Theatre and Pace. So grateful for the opportunity to learn music! Maybe someday I’ll even compose something? Only time will tell! 😊

You’ve heard of Rodgers & Hammerstein — now meet Josué & Richard.

Josué Martinez and Richard Appenzeller forged a creative partnership during their high school’s ASL production of “Hadestown,” blending their talents to make the show—and especially the character of Orpheus—something totally different from what anyone had seen previously. Both are part of a new generation of theater-makers making accessibility integral to storytelling on stage.

Give ‘em a 👏👏👏

“You can’t just read it and then sign word for word. That’s not how it works.”

“Rising Artist” Josue Martinez, who is deaf, explains the distinction between ASL translation and choreography — a critical skill that helped add another layer of meaning to his “Hadestown” performance.

The @cgsota graduate is now pursuing a BFA from @pacemusicaltheater. And he’s part of a new generation of students pushing accessibility beyond accommodation, presenting the language as an essential part of the art itself.
