We’re proud to celebrate Jackson State University Department of Art alumnus Felandus Thames @felandus, who will return home as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Mississippi Art Education Association Fall Conference! 🎨💙

A Jackson native, Thames earned his bachelor’s degree from JSU before receiving his M.F.A. from the Yale School of Art. Now an acclaimed contemporary artist whose work has been exhibited and collected nationally, he represents the enduring impact of a JSU arts education.

Thames will deliver the keynote address and lead a special masterclass during the conference, held October 22–24 at the Mississippi Museum of Art and Mississippi College.

This year’s theme, “Our Stories. Our Art. Our Legacy.,” makes his homecoming especially meaningful.

🔵 Registration opens August 30
🔴 Workshop proposals are due September 15

Now open at the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center: James Meredith: A Flashback to the March Against Fear.

This exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of James Meredith’s historic March Against Fear and reflects on the courage, collective action, and struggle for voting rights that shaped Mississippi and American history. Featured photographs include powerful moments from the march and its broader movement, including the image of 106-year-old El Fondren being hoisted victoriously above the crowd after registering to vote.

This exhibition was developed by the museum with assistance from JSU art student Brian Hunter and the history department’s Detrice Roberts, who contributed to the curation and installation of the exhibition.

Visit the exhibition at the Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center, 528 Bloom Street, Jackson, Mississippi.

Hours: Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM; Saturday, 10 AM–1 PM; Sunday closed.
