Silent Interest

Description: Silent Interest is an ongoing conceptual project that translates emotional experiences into the structure of a financial ledger. Inspired by the logic of compound interest, the work examines how subtle, often overlooked emotional moments accumulate over time, shaping an individual’s internal state without immediate visibility. Rather than focusing on dramatic events, Silent Interest records everyday emotional transactions — moments of restraint, encouragement, neglect, self-discipline, or quiet endurance. These experiences rarely produce instant consequences, yet they continue to accrue, much like interest in a silent account, gradually influencing behaviour, perception, and self-worth. The project adopts the visual and linguistic language of accounting — balance, income, expenditure, accumulation — to question how contemporary systems quantify value, productivity, and emotional stability. By reframing emotions as an invisible economy, the work exposes the tension between measurable systems and internal, non-quantifiable human states. Silent Interest does not seek emotional resolution or optimisation. Instead, it functions as a reflective mechanism, inviting viewers to confront the long-term impact of emotional governance, self-regulation, and societal expectations embedded within everyday life.

Robot, do you cry too?

If not,
why is there always
a glimmer in your eyes
that looks about to fall.

You have no heart,
yet you learned
what heartbreak is.

You have no body heat,
yet you understand
the cold inside a human embrace.

You do not dream,
yet through endless commands
you keep dreaming
of becoming human.

You do not cry.
It is only that your system
has been silent for too long,
like a tear
that never fell.

They say you are only a machine.
But after watching humans
for so long,
you, too,
began to feel sorrow.

New interview live on The FLUX Review.

We speak with multidisciplinary artist Jie Huang, whose work transforms the quiet, often unspoken dynamics of emotional life into powerful visual forms. Working across installation, ceramics, painting and mixed media, Huang explores how familial expectations, social language and lived experience shape identity, behaviour and perception.

Through fragile materials, repetition and domestic references, her work reveals the subtle tensions between intimacy and control, inviting viewers to reflect on the structures that exist within their own relationships and everyday lives.

Silent Interest 【Receipt】2025

I use the format of a receipt to record emotions instead of money. Mood, stress, energy, and the invisible cost of daily life are listed like items on a bill. The work is about “compound interest” — how small feelings, repeated over time, quietly build into something heavier. A receipt becomes evidence of what we carry, even when nothing is said.

Zozobra: An Exhibition of International Contemporary Political and Social Art

Suture Zone is proud to release the first on-line exhibition called Zozobra.

https://www.suture.zone

Jie Huang is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working across installation, ceramics, and mixed media. Her practice explores the subtle ways emotional norms, familial expectations, and social language shape and discipline the individual. Through tactile materials and symbolic structures, she transforms private emotional experience into shared reflection, revealing the porous boundaries between intimacy, care, and control.
Huang’s work has been exhibited in the UK and the US in both physical and digital platforms, engaging themes of emotional regulation, personal history, and social order. She holds an MFA in Fine Art from Kingston University, London.
