Silent Interest

Description: Silent Interest is an ongoing conceptual project that translates emotional experiences into the structure of a financial ledger. Inspired by the logic of compound interest, the work examines how subtle, often overlooked emotional moments accumulate over time, shaping an individual’s internal state without immediate visibility. Rather than focusing on dramatic events, Silent Interest records everyday emotional transactions — moments of restraint, encouragement, neglect, self-discipline, or quiet endurance. These experiences rarely produce instant consequences, yet they continue to accrue, much like interest in a silent account, gradually influencing behaviour, perception, and self-worth. The project adopts the visual and linguistic language of accounting — balance, income, expenditure, accumulation — to question how contemporary systems quantify value, productivity, and emotional stability. By reframing emotions as an invisible economy, the work exposes the tension between measurable systems and internal, non-quantifiable human states. Silent Interest does not seek emotional resolution or optimisation. Instead, it functions as a reflective mechanism, inviting viewers to confront the long-term impact of emotional governance, self-regulation, and societal expectations embedded within everyday life.

✨ Further Voices is now live ✨

An extension of Archives in Absence, this new section features 11 artists exploring themes of absence, memory, and the archive.

Created as a way to expand the exhibition beyond its original format, Further Voices brings together a range of practices and perspectives, highlighting work that continues the conversation in different and meaningful ways.

Each artist shares a selected work alongside insight into their practice, opening up new ways of thinking about what an archive can be, and whose voices it holds.

Really grateful to all the artists involved 💭

Jie Huang
"Invisible Prison" (2023)
Photography, digital airbrush, model, acrylic box. 3 1/5 × 1 9/10 × 1 1/5 in.

Artist Statement:
Invisible control: The transparent box symbolizes invisible societal constraints like norms and gender expectations. The person appears free but is trapped, highlighting hidden power structures.

Gender and societal expectations: The box also reflects the unspoken, oppressive societal expectations around gender, showing the struggle within these roles.

Truth distortion: The box limits perception, symbolizing how truth can be filtered and subjective, reflecting how narratives are shaped and controlled.

This work is a series of three small drawings, a small digital airbrush with mount.

About the Artist
Jie Huang (b. 2000, China) is an artist who explores a variety of materials and media, with an MA from Kingston College of Art, London. Her works, mainly sculptures, paintings and videos, reflect the contradictions and conflicts in today's society through the exploration of her personal inner world. Crying and tears have been an inescapable experience since she was a child and a unique way of expressing her emotions. She materializes this experience through her paintings and sculptures, showing the audience a deep understanding of the "tear incontinent" population. She uses her work to explore the feelings of emotions and objects in hopes of redefining how people view emotions.
