While the woman at Wegmans who said this to me meant well, I shouldn’t get any more credit for doing something that most Moms do every day.

Dads are more than capable of taking 2 kids to a grocery store or hanging with them when Mom isn’t home.

For all the Dads out there spending that time with their kids, good for you!

The truth about newborn neck tightness: it’s easy to miss — until the flat spot shows up.

And if you missed it at first? That does not make you a bad parent. Nobody teaches you to check for this. Now you know how 👇

Some babies have tightness, some don’t — and it’s totally okay if they do. Many times it’s due to their position in the womb or even mild birth trauma. Sometimes it’s just tightness, sometimes it’s torticollis, sometimes it’s an oral tie 🤷

Here’s the check (Margot was 2 weeks old here):
Support the body, tilt the head back, and check the skin folds. Then ease into a gentle stretch — extension and rotation — and notice whether one side feels tighter or more restricted than the other. Keep a hand on the neck/chest area to anchor the stretch.

Do it during diaper changes. Baby’s already on their back, and it takes 10 seconds.

Trust me — if you catch the tightness before it truly sets in, it makes for a much easier process. A tight neck is often where a head preference starts, and a head preference is where the flat spot comes from.

These posts are never meant to frighten. They’re meant to educate. Knowledge is power 💪

Save this for your next diaper change, and send it to a friend who’s pregnant or in the newborn trenches.

“MOMMY, DADDY, MARGOT, WOODY! I WENT POOP ON THE POTTY!”

As parents going through this for the first time, I am sharing what is working for us in our house! We tried to take the best advice from others and use it with Theo but ultimately the best advice is following their lead because it is up to them!

Exposure was super helpful for us. We have been talking about the potty and the potty has been present for some time before we did it with Theo. We also have been reading potty books, bought the poop emoji for his Tonie box, sing the Daniel Tiger song a lot, and just generally talk about it in the house.

With how on the go we are, a rainy, long weekend at home was super helpful to set him up for success!

A homemade sticker chart that led to a small, fun surprise was PERFECT.

Followed his cues on what worked from no pants to underwear.

Personally for us, he started to be a little resistant to consistent attempts so we put the ball in his court and let him tell us when he was ready!

We started taking walks to practice as well and he has been doing great.

We also have been using the new Upseat Potty and we love it. From an ergonomic standpoint, it puts him in a great position. The seat also works on the “big potty”. The step allows for grounding through the step and it also doubles as a place to stand to wash our hands!

Huge pediatric PT stamp of approval there.

Comment “POTTY” if you are interested in the seat!

YOUR NEWBORN ONLY CURVES ONE WAY?

That little C-curve isn’t just a quirk. Tightness can build up on one side of your baby’s body — a lot of times it’s linked to torticollis, and sometimes it’s simply from how they were positioned in the womb when space got tight.

Here’s why it matters: we want to catch asymmetries early so your baby builds symmetrical motor patterns from the start. Staying even now means smoother rolling, sitting, and crawling later.

The good news? You’re already changing 8-12 diapers a day. That’s 8-12 built-in chances to work this in — gently straighten those hips and lengthen the tight side every single time. No extra gear, no extra time carved out of your day.

Save this and try it at the next diaper change. by @jt.doscher

Watch how exercises can take a wobbly 5-step stepper into a confident walker.

Two weeks of this — that’s the whole story. Part 3, the payoff. (Parts 1 and 2 are on my page if you missed them.)

And here’s what most people get backwards: she didn’t get here by walking more. She got here with:

→ Free-standing balance work (no holding on)
→ Reaching and squatting to build ankle stability
→ Toes forward, hips stacked
→ Falling and getting back up on her own
→ Multi-directional stepping — not just forward

Confident walking doesn’t come from more steps. It comes from better building blocks.

If your little one is in the wobbly phase, save this and try 5 minutes a day for 2 weeks. Then come back and tell me what changed. by @jt.doscher

I need everyone who works with babies to hear this one.

A 17-month-old, not walking, told to “wait one more month” — that’s just the most recent example. In my 8 years as a pediatric PT, a consistent frustration has been delays in referrals — to me or to whatever specialist is appropriate.

And I love my colleagues. Pediatricians, orthopedists, neurologists — you are the reason I have a career. This isn’t a shot at anyone.

But when a kid isn’t hitting a gross motor milestone, the wait-and-see month can be the month we lose. Early PT isn’t overreacting. It’s often the window where therapy can help most, when the brain is most adaptable.

A referral doesn’t mean something is wrong. It means getting eyes on it early so a small delay stays small.

I’m imploring you: use a little more deductive reasoning when you’re guiding parents through gross motor development. When in doubt, earlier is better.

Share this with a parent who needs to hear this — because so many times it’s on them to keep pushing and advocating for their own child.
