Painting can interrupt and throw into doubt the assumptions that accompany what might be considered normal vision. It recalls to us a sense of the look of things, and reconstitutes the integrity of visual experience, providing an echo of the complexities and strangeness we edit out of daily life, the flesh and bones of the visual world that we ignore of necessity. In both the making and contemplating of paintings, the conventions or habits that allow normal seeing can be subtly disrupted, the path of sight retraced, and vision itself is slowed, questioned, revised. In this sense painting might be thought of as the “undoing” of sight.

Giacometti in 1959:
“What interests me in all paintings is likeness — that is, what likeness is for me: something that makes me uncover the external world a little.”

Giacometti’s statement suggests that “likeness” is both subjective and objective, that there are aspects of the external world that are hidden in plain sight, and that painting offers ways of uncovering something of that mystery.

Australian Women Artists

The podcast

Ep 90 Jude Rae

Jude Rae is one of Australia’s most respected painters.

She’s an artist who has spent over four decades looking very, very hard at the things most of us walk straight past — jars, bottles, gas cylinders, fire extinguishers, empty foyers — and turning them into paintings of extraordinary stillness and presence.

Jude was born in Sydney and was the daughter of realist painter David Rae. In fact, both her father and Grandmother trained at Julian Ashton Art School...and in 1968 Jude herself joined classes there. And, having done the sums, I calculated that she was 12 years old when this occurred!

Jude went on to study art and architecture of the Renaissance at the University of Sydney and undertook postgraduate study at COFA and then spent over a decade in New Zealand where she completed a Masters at Canterbury University. NZ is, as a result, a place she calls her second home.

Jude has twice won the Portia Geach Memorial Award, she’s won the Bulgari Art Award in 2016, has been a four-time finalist in the Archibald Prize, three of those times being Highly Commended. Her portraits hang in Parliament House, the High Court and the National Portrait Gallery. And in 2025 she won the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

She has a very special place in the Australian art canon.

To hear our conversation, head to wherever you find your podcasts and search under Australian Women Artists...or head to the link in my bio.

Jude is represented by Philip Bacon Gallery in Brisbane and Two Rooms, Auckland NZ

UPDATE: This has been an unexpectedly popular post! For obvious reasons I suppose - the gritty streets of Redfern hosting native beauty: who’d have thought…!

But please note a correction to the assumption that this is my doing - it is not.

Some years ago I think a couple of ground floor residents made this planting and it has taken years to manifest this reward. They are long gone from here but I hope news of their legacy finds its way to them.

And there is STILL one bloom left. Another surprise and thanks to all those who might have been tempted but decided to leave well alone.

Redfern waratahs! Such a public delight. I wonder if they will be there tomorrow.
Alas one has gone already… On the bright side, one remains.

A belated update on my ANU Drill Hall lecture “”Representational Painting and the Flesh of the World” via YouTube.

As no.6 in the series Artworks of Significance I try to describe some of the artworks that have left a mark on me. The second half is a discussion of some of my own more successful failures for context.

A belated farewell from me to Viv Binns, whose work I first encountered in 1979 when she was Artist in Residence at the University of NSW and it opened my eyes.

Viv was a “force of nature” as they say and a huge figure in contemporary art in her life time. I finally met her when I moved to Canberra in 2003 and later we both had studios Australian National Capital Artists (ANCA) studios in Dickson.

I would walk past Viv’s studio frequently and this I what I would see (although there was usually a lot more going on than you see here!).

Vale Viv.

Earlier this year I was invited by the ANU Drill Hall to speak as part of their series ‘Artworks of Significance: ideas, history, aesthetics, and cultural context’.
I rather rashly accepted and then forgot about it until a friend reminded me. It is daunting to realise that I will be speaking about my own small efforts in the light of some of the most important paintings ever made. “Aim high” I say - there is no avoiding history!

Do come and listen to me talk about some of my favourite things.
