"calorie" addresses the complex topic of warmth, combining technology, material, and feminist discourse. As a process of exchange and movement, the concept of warmth permeates private, social, and political spaces alike, raising the question of the right temperature for the living and functional conditions of both the living and technological environment.
The creative and destructive potential of heat determines the central discourses of the present – from global warming and technological questions of energy production to heat as a mode of social coexistence and a counterpoint to "bourgeois coldness." Heat flows – always from the warmer body to the colder. It is invisible to the human eye, accessible through sensory, physical perception. As a theme, medium, and material, heat and energy transfer have always played a central role in Fegerl's oeuvre. The exhibition at OK presents works from different creative periods in new spatial and conceptual contexts and extensions. In current works conceived for the Linz OK, the artist reflects on the contemporary relevance of thermal factors and makes them perceptible on various levels. Furthermore, the body of the museum itself becomes an actor in Fegerl's artistic exploration of thermals and their trans-spatial, transformative power. by @judithfegerl

🔥 “calorie” by Judith Fegerl, a video documentation worth watching.
🌡️ Heat as material.
⚡ Heat as politics.
🫀 Heat as a form of relation.
Curated by Susanne Watzenboeck
On view at OK Linz until the end of the week
What is the “right” temperature for living, for bodies, buildings, society, and art institutions?
In “calorie”, warmth becomes more than a physical condition. Referencing the historical unit of energy “the calorie” Fegerl explores heat as exchange, movement, and power. Once a scientific measure, today the calorie is entangled with consumption, discipline, and the regulation of bodies.
From global warming to energy production, from technological systems to forms of social coexistence, heat shapes our present. It flows according to the laws of thermodynamics, always from warmer to colder bodies, invisible yet physically perceptible, and inseparable from questions of power.
The exhibition brings together a perfect mix of art, science, technology through art works from different periods. Through newly conceived site-specific pieces, the museum itself is transformed into a thermodynamic body: sensing, transferring, and responding. A polyvalent visual framework for grounding oneself in poly-crisis, and the role of energy in both art and society. Because “ex nihilo nihil fit resonates: conceptually with the exhibition’s insistence on circulation, flow, and relationality. Final days: @JudithFegerl – calorie

In calorie, Judith Fegerl transforms the heating infrastructure of the building into a spatial and political intervention. By installing her own thermal network, she shifts the question of energy into the realm of regulation and power. Temperature structures presence. Warmth becomes a social force.

Copper and clay act as carriers, storers, and translators of heat. The installation unfolds as a choreography of circulation and exchange, making energy physically perceptible across the space.

Rather than presenting static objects, calorie operates as a dynamic system. It asks how heat, labor, and attention organize bodies and institutions, and how invisible infrastructures shape our experience.

today, we were delighted to welcome prof. dr. elena beregow to the exhibition calorie by @judithfegerl.

since april 2025, she has been leading the research group “sweat. on the sociology of sweating in a warming world” at the college for social sciences and humanities of the universitätsallianz ruhr. her research explores how modern ideals of coolness and distance shift under intensifying heatwaves — and how heat amplifies social inequalities through unequal access to cooling, differing vulnerabilities, and emerging cooling technologies.

in calorie, heat unfolds as physical energy as well as social force — resonating closely with beregow‘s work on the cultural and political dimensions of sweating. her visit sparked a rich exchange on bodies, climate, and the social tensions embedded in temperature itself — a dialogue we are looking forward to continue in the work on the show’s catalogue. by @judithfegerl

For calorie, @JudithFegerl transformed the heating infrastructure of OK Linz into a spatial, political, and material intervention. What usually remains invisible - temperature gradients, heat distribution, zones of intensity - becomes legible here through thermal photography.

Captured by photographer @guenterrichardwett, the images translate the installation into spectra of red, orange, and green. Walls, clay, copper, air: all appear as active agents within a choreography of circulation and regulation. Warmth is no longer atmospheric background, but structure.

The photographs reveal what the naked eye cannot perceive: how energy moves, accumulates, dissipates. They make visible that calorie is not an object, but a condition: a shifting constellation of heat, space, and presence.
