Last days to visit EMPTY PLACES, CROWDED HEARTS at our Berlin gallery.

The exhibition brings together ten female artists across generations, placing seminal positions from the 1970s and 1980s in dialogue with contemporary practices.

From serial and conceptual systems to corporeal, material, and performative approaches, the works explore fundamental questions of order, materiality, and structure.

Featuring works by Channa Horwitz, Hanne Darboven, Charlotte Posenenske, Sylvie Fleury, Rosemarie Trockel, Ruscha Voormann, Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg, Sophie-Luise Passow, Judith Fegerl, and Carola Dertnig, Empty Places, Crowded Hearts reflects on structure as both an intellectual and social principle, while opening up dynamic relationships between body, space, image, and material.

Currently on view at Crone Berlin: The groupshow EMPTY PLACES, CROWDED HEARTS, a cross-generational panorama of female artistic strategies with abstract or abstracting references.

Through the works of ten female artists – Hanne Darboven, Carola Dertnig, Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg, Judith Fegerl, Sylvie Fleury, Channa Horwitz, Sophie-Luise Passow, Charlotte Posenenske, Rosemarie Trockel, Ruscha Voormann – influential positions from the 1970s and 1980s are brought into dialogue with current trends.

The works on view by Channa Horwitz, Hanne Darboven, Charlotte Posenenske, Sylvie Fleury, and Rosemarie Trockel exemplify a conceptual engagement with structure through serial systems, time-based orders, and a critical reflection on cultural and material codes. Their practices have had a lasting impact on the understanding of structure as both an intellectual and a social principle.

Younger artists such as Ruscha Voormann, Hannah Sophie Dunkelberg, Sophie-Luise Passow, Judith Fegerl, and Carola Dertnig further develop these approaches, exploring surfaces, materials, and narrative constellations as open and fragile systems in which body, space, and image enter into dynamic relationships.

The exhibition thus brings together works from different generations who engage with fundamental questions of order, materiality, and perception. Serial and conceptual methodologies are given equal significance alongside corporeal and material-oriented processes as well as performative approaches.

“- UM ETWAS -“ by LUISE LUTZ & MICHEL STRÜMPF
A ladder made of aluminium tubes and steel cable is suspended in the courtyard of the castle, hanging seemingly mid-air and reaching nowhere. The ladder is conceived as a metaphorical object: a tool that can help us reach other places, a carrier of potential. It can be interpreted as a sculptural expression of the subjunctive (dt. Konjunktiv). In language, the subjunctive is generally associated with describing something other than the apparent reality. In the attempt to make it spatially tangible, the object encourages reflection on the potentials of narrative. The subjunctive functions not only as a linguistic tool, but as a way of thinking – it opens perspectives on what could be, on the unspoken and the possible.

AN ECHO IS THE WHISPER OF AN ABSENCE by LORENZO ZERBINI

Sequoia needles of copper hang in equilibrium to form a mobile. Each element is cast from fallen needles of the redwood sequoia in the garden of Schloss Hollenegg. The tree was brought from America in the nineteenth century by Heinrich Liechtenstein and is now slowly dying. Through casting, the fragile, transient leaves are translated into a precious and enduring material and enter in dialogue with the historic metal objects preserved in the family’s collection. The gesture conserves presence rather than resisting loss, transforming organic impermanence into material continuity. In doing so, the work reflects on the sequoia’s layered status—as botanical specimen, cultural import, and bearer of memory—and asks what we choose to preserve.

MIND THE GAP by KLEMENS HEGEN

The work is a bent, freestanding sculpture composed of curved aluminium tubes sourced from decommissioned ÖBB trains. These once-functional handrails, worn by four decades of daily use, have been severed from their original context and reassembled into a configuration that appears supportive yet offers no actual support. Stability is often promised through form, yet rarely guaranteed in practice. What once supported moving bodies in transit is transformed into an abstract, self-standing arrangement, visually balanced, but fundamentally unusable. It prompts a reconsideration of the act of holding on—not as a physical gesture, but as a social and economic condition asking what structures truly sustain us, and who has access to stability.

Negative impressions of the castle windows are produced on aluminium plates using cyanotype. Each plate is coated with a UV-sensitive solution of iron salts and exposed to sunlight passing through the windows. The lead profiles block the light, while the uncovered areas react and form an image in Prussian blue. Cyanotype is an analogue photographic process in which iron(III) ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide react under UV exposure to create a permanent pigment. The work addresses the dual role of light in the castle. Daylight is required to illuminate the rooms for visitors, but it also accelerates material deterioration through fading and surface change. The images record this effect directly on the metal surface.
