I love this picture because of all of the shapes, sizes, and colors of these pumpkins.

People always have - and always will - come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. What if we took pleasure in this diversity rather than judging some looks as better than others? After all, it is the diversity in nature that makes it so appealing, and human beings are part of nature.

People always have - and always will - come in different shapes and sizes.

I am not trying to blame or shame anyone. The unfortunate reality is that weight bias is a systemic problem that leaves individuals desperate to attain a certain size. Children often receive messages that the path to worthiness and acceptance is to become thin or stay thin. The fear of fat becomes very real. So does an increase in anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.

This focus on the pursuit of weight loss also contributes to the objectification of bodies, especially women’s bodies. This is especially on my mind today as we’ve learned about the sexual assault of a young woman on the Cornell University campus.

We are more than our bodies. We deserve to be safe. We deserve to be respected. And kids need to learn to honor and take care of their bodies rather than trying to mold them into something for other people’s viewing pleasure.

I’ve been interested in how the mental health field perpetuates anti-fat bias, which led me to the creation of a 3 hour ethics course with PESI.

I got to share a piece of that work at the Body Image Summit yesterday. So many wonderful presentations!!!

My gratitude to our host, @pesi_inc for understanding the importance and value of the weight-inclusive framework 🙏🙏🙏

Did you know that it’s Weight Stigma Awareness Week?

So
everyone gets to decide whether using a GLP-1 is what’s best for them, Also, GLP-1’s are used in much smaller doses to treat some health conditions other than being prescribed for the pursuit of weight loss. (It was noticed that weight loss was a side effect of GLP1’s, so drug companies have increased the dosage to increase that side effect).

Pharmaceutical companies built marketing campaigns to say that they are addressing the issue of weight stigma with GLP-1s. Their message is that ob*sity is a disease so it’s not your fault that you’re fat - and we have a drug to treat your disease so you won’t have to be fat anymore.

Framing it that way may make some people feel like they’re “escaping” from the stigma of being at a higher weight.

But what about the person who:
-can’t afford the cost of a GLP-1
-can’t tolerate the side effects of a GLP-1?
-has worked to heal their relationship with food and or accept their body at its current size and has no interest in using a GLP-1?

Unfortunately we are seeing weight stigma increase as some are viewed as “not taking care of themselves” for choosing not to use a GLP-1. Others are viewed as “cheating” because they’re losing weight by using a GLP- 1. None of that is helpful.

People have always come in different shapes and sizes - and they always will. You can’t keep telling higher weight people to pursue medication so they won’t fat (and make lots of money from doing that) and still say that you’re solving the problem of weight stigma. Nope 🙁

Hey clinicians! Here’s a great way to get your CE’s AND hear from a wonderful group of speakers!!!

Lots of important topics - my favorite workshop title is Ragen Chastain’s What to Expect When You’re Injecting. 😊 Most of us have clients either thinking about - or using - a GLP1, so lots of very helpful information.

And lots of other great topics too including menopause, body shame, social media, ethics and more - you can check out the speakers and descriptions through the link.

The Body Image Summit is 50% off through 8/27 (I don’t know if that date will be extended). So sign up soon - we’d love to see you there!

The topic of GLP1’s is everywhere - whether it’s the barrage of ads in traditional and social media or the conversations that can spring up anywhere and at anytime.

As you observe celebrities, friends or acquaintances lose weight, how do you feel? We know that bodies have always come in different shapes and sizes, but the pressures to lose weight can feel even greater at this moment in time.

Keep in mind that low doses of GLP1’s have been found helpful to treat certain medical conditions such as diabetes. A side effect of that use was found to be weight loss - so the dosages have been significantly increased to achieve more weight loss. Along with higher dosages comes greater risk of side effects, some of them very serious.

If you are considering the use of a GLP1 for weight loss, make sure you are fully informed about these risks.

If you are not considering use of a GLP1, keep reminding yourself that you deserve to feel good in - and take care of - the body you have now. 💜

For many of you reading this, the idea that for restrictions lead to bingeing is old news! But far too many people are still eliminating certain foods or food groups in pursuit of weight loss.

If that applies to you, here are some things you should know.
-If you find yourself bingeing at night, there’s a good chance you’re under nourishing your body during the day.
-If you find yourself bingeing on foods that you’ve made off limits, you’re having a natural reaction. By forbidding those foods you increase their value so when they’re around, they “glitter” and become more desirable.
-Keep in mind that restrictions can be subtle, so notice if you’re judging the foods you binge on or planning to take them away.

It is possible to have a relationship with food where you nourish your body and find satisfaction without the restrictions that set you up to binge. You deserve a peaceful relationship with food!

A gentle reminder: you weren’t born thinking one body size is better than another. Think about how little kids are embodied, as they run, skip, and jump in a carefree way.

Unfortunately, very early in life for many, the lessons of diet culture take over. Whether they come from family members, peers, health professionals, or the media, etc. these messages are clear: your body is an object. Rather than staying embodied, how others view your body becomes the quest.

In that process, you internalize these diet culture messages so that YOU now see your body as an object to be manipulated, rather than experiencing your body as your home, a place to experience pleasure and to take care of in ways that feel good to you.

No matter where you’re at in the process of making peace with your body, please remember that you deserve to be treated with respect at any size - by others and by yourself!

I have worked with so many clients who put off or cancel their doctor’s appointments for routine medical care.
So many have experienced fat shaming within the medical profession:

-Being told to lose weight no matter the symptoms - and regardless of the treatments and strategies offered to thinner patients with the same symptoms.
-Getting an eye roll when explaining why they no longer want to diet
-Have assumptions made about what they’re eating without be asked.

The list goes on and on.

It makes sense that if you’ve been fat shamed by your doctor, you don’t want to go to those appointments. You may want to take care of your health, but also want to protect yourself from being shamed.

It’s important to have compassion towards yourself. It’s important to see a doctor on a regular basis. If possible, you may want to see if you can to find a doctor who is weight neutral/inclusive, or will at least respect your boundaries when it comes to the topic of weight.

You can check out @marylambertsings - she has a list of weight neutral leads in her bio.

It’s wonderful to see The Emotional Eating, Chronic Dieting, Bingeing and Body Eating & Body Image Workbook make its way around the world - even though it’s unfortunate that people in the Czech Republic are caught in the diet cycle.

A nice surprise to see their new, colorful cover👍💜
