Solo Sparkly Adventure Day #26.

Well, there is nothing like going back home. And Chicago did not disappoint.

As a kid, I always loved driving along the expressway from Wilmette, when suddenly the skyline would come into view and I still get a total charge out of it.

I stayed downtown, in the Gold Coast neighbourhood and was absolutely wowed by the experience. The Thompson Hotel is absolutely gorgeous (and I am racking up those Expedia points!) And how perfect that the little street right outside the hotel was named Frank Sinatra Place.

I had amazing dinner at one restaurant (yes, I love a wedge salad) and then after realising I hadn’t had dessert I stopped at a different café and had an amazing Keylime pie in honour of my dad.

I’ve had the most amazing time reuniting with some very very special people, including: my beautiful cousin Ellen Winick (a.k.a. Ellen Helen), one of my very oldest friends Holly Schak (a.k.a. Holle), my actual oldest friend (we met when we were each in our mom‘s wombs) Lori Felton O’Hara, (a.k.a. Lor-Lor) and a dear high school friend Judith (no a.k.a. 😉).

In addition, I got a little bit of time with Ellen‘s husband, Gary Mitchiner, Lori‘s husband Steve O’Hara, and Judith’s husband David Barhydt.

What’s amazing to me is that with each person the connection is just so instant. We end up reminiscing about old times but also go deep into what’s happening with our current lives. (As I’ve always said, I hate small talk — I like big talk!)

I’m grateful to each and everyone of them for making the time for me as the schedule was a little tight! And of course I delivered lots of magic wands. ✨✨✨

The pictures don’t quite do the feelings justice, but I guess it’s true “there’s no place like home!” ♥️

Last week in a nutshell. Don’t shop at big box stores my babes. The revolution isn’t always about what you do, it can be about what you don’t do! 💐

We’re hearing the phrase “food noise” a lot lately, but is it really new? In this conversation with @judmatz we explore how diet culture reframes old struggles with shiny new language, and what that means for our relationship with food.

For many, the pull toward weight loss makes sense in a world full of fat-shaming and anti-fat bias. But Judith offers another perspective: when we shift away from restriction and the diet mindset, the constant preoccupation with food can finally quiet down.

Did you know that people in the ‘overweight’ category actually live the longest? 🤯

Research shared by @judmatz challenges the weight-loss narrative we’ve all been taught, showing that it’s fitness, balanced habits, and freedom from shame, not the number on the scale, that matter most for our health.

Together, Judith and Ann explore how cultural biases and fatphobia have shaped harmful messages about bodies, and why it’s time to redefine what true health really looks like physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

This International No-Diet Day, we’re inviting therapists to reframe the way we talk about disordered and emotional eating.

Before we explore coping skills or unprocessed feelings, we have to name the harm caused by restriction and diet culture. Because often, what looks like “emotional eating” is actually the body responding to deprivation and shame.

We’re offering a free excerpt from The Emotional Eating, Chronic Dieting, Binge Eating & Body Image Workbook to support your work with clients in a more weight-inclusive, trauma-informed way.

This resource will help you:
• Recognize how dieting drives disordered eating
• Hold space for clients to explore their relationship with food and body without blame
• Offer practical tools rooted in compassion and connection

As therapists, we often encounter clients who blame themselves for emotional eating, viewing it as a lack of willpower. However, it's crucial to recognize that these behaviors are frequently rooted in the deprivation and shame perpetuated by diet culture.

This International No-Diet Day, consider exploring a trauma-informed, weight-inclusive approach that helps clients:
• Reject diet culture and its harmful narratives
• Honor their hunger cues and trust their bodies
• Practice attuned eating to reconnect with their needs
• Cultivate self-compassion in their healing journey
• Nourish their bodies without guilt
• Navigate emotional eating with understanding and care

To support you in this work, we're offering a free excerpt from The Emotional Eating, Chronic Dieting, Binge Eating & Body Image Workbook by @Judmatz, Amy Pershing, and @chr1styharrison. This resource provides practical tools to help clients heal their relationship with food and body image.

If we are truly interested in ending the shame and blame people experience around body shape and size, then we need to keep unlearning anti-fat bias on an individual level and change it at a systemic level.

Weight loss medications may help those who can access them and tolerate them escape weight stigma - at least for now. But changing individual bodies will never solve the problem of weight stigma in our culture. In fact, it may make it worse if and when higher weight people are blamed for not getting on the medication bandwagon.

I respect body autonomy, and I believe that all bodies deserve to be treated with respect. 💜💜💜

Thank you to @chr1styharrison for this important post emphasizing that there is no blame or shame in having an eating disorder.

Christy co-authored an excellent workbook with CED Board President Amy Pershing and @judmatz (listed in Christy’s comment below) that helps to address this issue.

There are so many cultural forces pushing us toward problematic relationships with food.

It’s not your fault or a personal failing if you end up developing disordered eating.

In too many cases, the trigger is behaviors you were led to believe were right or “healthy,” like dieting for weight loss or wellness.

The good news: you don’t *have* to stay stuck in disordered eating. It is possible to make a change.

👉🏼 If you’re looking for support in that process, a resource that might help is THE EMOTIONAL EATING, CHRONIC DIETING, BINGE EATING & BODY IMAGE WORKBOOK, which I co-authored with therapists @judmatz and Amy Pershing to help people just like you (and all of us, earlier in our lives) make peace with food.

Head to my bio link to learn more about the workbook and get your copy today.
