Trying out a minimalist recording approach today. One mono microphone up in the top corner of the room (behind the drums /hi hat side). Then stereoizing the sound with a couple of wide room verbs. And thennn I slapped a conga groove on there, because… why the hell not?? ✨🌶️

Wandering, dreaming, would I find what I need?
Was feeling uneasy, longing for light to receive me.

Look Up is out today!
Give it a listen wherever you prefer but If you’d like to purchase the track, you can do so on bandcamp.

I know it’s out of focus 😵‍💫… just a snippet I recorded earlier this year after setting up my old custom @officialayottedrums for the first time in close to 20 years. It’s funny, just seeing those purple shells set up in their complete configuration, (8/10/12/14/16/22X20!) was like opening a time capsule from the early 2000’s. Kamikaze Baby. Working at the drum shop, playing those first shows. The thrill of creating our own music and the ecstasy of sharing it with our friends and fans in those early grimey venues. Club Zone. Lambi. L’Alizé… what a time to be alive and in a band in Montreal. It was all so raw, mysterious and magical. From a time before the smartphone and other so called “advancements” in technology. Expressing ourselves freely and uninhibitedly. If you were at the show, then you were there to live it with us. No instant replay, no watching it through the little black mirror. Just memories… blurry and faded but real as it gets… like something from a Deja Vu. #kamikazebaby #iykyk by @julespampena

Some photos from a session I did last week at @studio_mixart 🎙️… we shot a live video and audio recording for @paulfarranmusic featuring the talented @simon.boisseau on piano 🎹

I absolutely adore doing these live sessions. It’s always a challenge to capture everything cleanly, not to mention nail the performance! There are a lot of moving parts to these captures, but when the vibe is right and the players are gelling, they really make for magical recordings.

A human experience. A time and place. More of this please :) by @julespampena

Showed up to reheasral a little early today… The sun was smiling down on those cherry red Yamahas through the sky light. The room had that nice open high ceiling sound to it. I sat down to play, and for a moment, it felt like I was at Vanier college again, on a warm summer afternoon with a lively ensemble room all to myself. Nothing but time, wood chips and rudiments to focus on. Simpler times. ☀️🥁🎼💙 by @julespampena
