Walking through Downtown Los Angeles is an adventure. Probably not one I'd choose again. But I grabbed some shots while navigating sticky sidewalks and tent camps. People form communities no matter where they land. And strange as it seems, beauty really is everywhere if you know how to look. #blackandwhite #downtownla #toydistrict 🖤🏴‍☠️⚫️ taken in Toy District, Los Angeles by @julia.hensley

Picasso said "I never throw away a scrap of paper". I read that once and it went in deep.

Lately, I've been playing around with these drawings on paper otherwise bound for the trash or the recycling. Riffing off my "travelogues", I call them "trashelogues".

They're a lexicon of symbols, made up language, rock forms, nature studies, dinosaurs, cartoon characters, archaeological artifacts, planets, rockets, numbers and made up language, written and overwritten, graffiti-style.

It's a practice, a kind of cataloging of the universe as I encounter it in reality and in my mind, and an emulation of the way nature creates and destroys and creates something new, with no care or sentimentality for what has come before, only an endless cycle.
