We have been attending the most unusual theater performances over the last month by a theater group call the Exodus Ensemble. These are super intimate performances — the Chekov play (Ivanov) we saw last weekend had an audience of 10 and a cast of 10. But to say we “saw” a performance is incorrect, as we were participants as well. The event took place in an old Carmelite Monastery down the road. The “performance” took place in about 8 or more different rooms as we followed actors from scene to scene. Bedrooms, living room, party room, kitchen, outside on the grass — all were specific settings of the play. We interacted directly with each of the characters. Sometimes they would be asking us advice on how to deal with a situation — like helping them write a letter to another character, or helping them film a video or pick out clothes for an event. The level of cohesion of this ensemble is staggering. The plays are really interpretations of a specific drama with a large degree of improvisation going on. All the actors stay in character as they engaged with us. Taking in our responses to what is happening. Yet all the while they are pushing the story forward like clockwork. At points along the way a character might ask us what we think is going on with another character. When we offered up suggestions, this info would often find its way to weaving into the story — popping up in strange places much later in the night. The whole experience is unlike anything I have experienced before and is rightfully to be recognized as the result of them listening deep into the meaning of theater and bringing back a highly creative answer to its purpose and form. The closest thing to this for me was a performance I went to in NYC back in 90s of La Fura dels Baus from Spain. For that event the audience met in the East Village where we got on a school bus that drove us out to a warehouse in Queens. We we arrived we were pushed into the middle of the room and virtually assaulted by nearly naked men with shopping carts, chains and chainsaws. There were giant water tanks that they descended into. There was fire. And there was an emergency medical on hand, just in case.. cont. below

On top of Wheeler Peak, New Mexico this summer. Hike up was a challenge, but coming down....oh man...my knees were toast for a few weeks. Marmots and curious chipmunks on the top.

Julia Hensley \ Star Systems, 2013. To see more of this work and other past shows, visit the link in our profile! Hensley unapologetically demonstrates that abstraction is firmly rooted in observation; pointing to herself, pointing outside of herself. Figurative shapes stand in opposition to one another, in suspense of collision. Patches of painted paper, metallic bits, and colored tagboard are integrated with the white of the paper; as strategic a use of color as the darkest value, emphasized by painterly strokes, bleeds and blooms of ink. The work constructs itself as it grows, moving in assemblage the way a musical composition is born - note by note. #juliahensley #starsystems #collage #painting #contemporarypainting #abstraction #seattleartist #lxwxhgallery #bridgeproductions
