Since April, after a tragedy in my family, my creative life has almost come to a standstill. I’m still not ready to talk about it publicly.

These photos were taken around that time. I was going through a lot, but in front of the camera I still tried to look like the familiar version of myself.

Looking at them a few months later, I can see that disconnect so clearly. In these photos, I don’t just see myself. I see myself trying to look like myself, recognizable to me and familiar to everyone else.

The funny thing is that I ended up living inside the very subject I’ve been exploring in my work for so long. We choose how we present ourselves, and then we keep trying to live up to that choice, even when it no longer matches what’s happening inside.

We mirror the world around us and subconsciously hold on to familiar images. Even when we choose not to conform, the ways we rebel aren’t entirely original either. Sometimes it feels like we’re tracing our own lives over someone else’s “better” script.

That’s why I keep coming back to portraits, especially portraits of myself. I layer repeated images of my face, shifting and overlapping them until the face stops feeling whole and begins to resemble a mask.

I hope I’ll start showing up here more often and that art will slowly find its way back into my life in all its different forms. taken in RWK Studios by @julia__liko

Serie AS IMAGE
Interstice of the Unsent Selfies, assembly version May, 2026

Each installation becomes a slightly different version of the work. The drawings and the acrylic frame stay physically the same, but the transparent layers shift and overlap differently every time. Because of this, the image can never be repeated exactly.

I’m interested in this unstable state of perception and self-image within today’s digital culture, where identity is constantly rebuilt through memory, images, and the gaze of others.

Tomorrow we open Group Show #17 at the New & Abstract Gallery (@new_and_abstract ). A layered selection of contemporary works in painting, video, installation, and digital spaces unfolds a dialogue between abstraction, movement, and fragmented narratives—meeting in a shared field of resonance.

We are excited to present the Berlin-based artists Yulia Ani (@yuliani.art ) and Julia Liko (@julia__liko ) in the latest ART RADAR interview. For the upcoming GROUP SHOW 17, opening on May 7, they will take on the guest curation of the “New Perspectives” section.

Artistic practice and curatorial thinking merge in the work of Yulia Ani and Julia Liko into a shared process: with New Perspectives, they create a space for dialogue between generations and artistic positions, navigating material, perception, and transformation.
In the interview, they speak about selection, collaboration, and curating as an extension of their own practice.

Today is a full moon, a day of renewal, and spring has arrived.
A good start for a new artist’s name.

For the past three years, I have been trying to come up with a pseudonym as an artist. I felt uneasy working under my real last name. In the very beginning, I signed my paintings with my last name, actually my father’s, and later with my husband’s. Often I didn’t even sign my own name, Yulia or Julia. Later, my name became Julia Golikova, Shanaytsa.

And there was always the question, where am I in all of this? I looked at our roots, my mother’s last name, my grandmothers, great-grandmothers. Nothing felt right. I always wanted to have a connection to my father, the artist who gave me this experience I cannot let go of, but not completely. I have been painting since childhood and cannot imagine my life without painting, without the creative process, without constantly observing faces and images, and the lifestyle of a dreamer.

You cannot imagine how many names I went through in the past three years, when building a new website, making business cards, submitting CVs for open calls. But none of them felt right.

Yesterday, an idea finally came that I loved.

Now I am Julia Liko.

It comes from the middle of my father’s last name. There is a connection to him, but only I understand it.

And since I am a portraitist, in my native language Liko means face.

Everything came together.

I am not famous enough yet to worry about criticism for changing my artist’s name. And since real changes are waiting for me ahead, it is the right time to make the change.

This work is never fixed. Each time it is assembled differently - the frame shifts, the view changes, transparent layers move.

Only the drawing remains stable. Like memory, it holds a core but is never the same.
