I fell so in love with the stunning campaign @from.form created for @beataheuman that I decided to do my own spin on it last weekend.

Featuring my mom’s gorgeous garden, my dad’s chunky koi fish, Stella the dog, Becca’s beautiful face, me in the yellow dress, and every tick currently residing on the north shore of Long Island.

a few underwater portraits we filmed this summer in Coney Island

these were an experiment we tried out for a project called Omar in Wonderland. It’s a memory play tracing the long and winding journey that brought @3mr_and from Syria to New York, mapped onto one psychedelic Coney Island beach day

This was also just so fun to do. Highly recommend setting up an underwater portrait station at your next party! taken in Coney Island by @juliadeguz

These are a selection of clips, in no particular order, from a short I made a couple of years ago. It’s about betrayal and protection and rage and… poison ivy. It’s been on my mind this week

The idea came together when I started reading about poison ivy in mythology. After a lifetime of rashes so severe they set off nighttime hallucinations, I figured I would be wise to learn about the plant causing me so much pain

(my talented mom @ldeguzma2 cancelled her plans to help me paint this stop motion glitter rash)

I found out it’s only us humans who suffer when we touch her. Everyone else eats her berries in the fall and lives among her leaves in peace

And she grows strongest where land is ripped open. To people in tune with the forest, a large patch of poison ivy is a cue that this place is healing and, right now, man is not welcome

(this clip features @carolin_wood beautiful pink home 💖)

She’s a protector and a total badass and I became obsessed. So in the way I do when an idea lights me up, I wrote a poem and crafted costumes, and made friends and family film me running around the city and setting things on fire in the Maine woods (during the rainy season, with a fire extinguisher on hand👨‍🚒).

(endless thanks to @imogen__best and @gbestyo for letting me start fires on their land)

The poem and the film are both called Leaves of Three

The full poem is on the next few slides. The Full video is up on YouTube (as of this morning… 😬 type b filmmaker over here). Link is in my bio.

Wrote it before ai forced me to scrub em dashes from everything. God I used to love the em dash

Leaves of Three

The year you turn 14, you will start losing your hold on reality.

Something happens that winter — the kind of thing that splits time into before and after and spits you out of your own body.

For a while, all you can do is watch from above as the waves try to pull you under.

So that’s all you do.

Until one day in July, a bright red rash blooms up and down your arms.
It twists between your fingers and creeps beneath your armpits, racing across your shoulders until it has a stranglehold around your neck

It’s hot and oozing, and your skin cracks anywhere it bends.

Anyone who’s spent any time with me over the past year has heard a lot about this short film I’ve been working on, The Last Guardian. Probably more than they ever wanted to hear, tbh

But this place has captivated me completely. It’s odd and uncanny and stunningly beautiful — a crossroads where the built world and natural world collide in dazzling, confusing, and catastrophic ways.

This project has also been my first real experience overseeing a team bigger than just myself. Working with people who not only see and share the dream, but who have expanded and improved it beyond what I could ever have done on my own.

We’re well into the edit and I’m really excited to share the final product. Probably sometime in the spring. But for now, here are a few shots I love set to cues from our wildly talented composer, who really understood the assignment and ran with it

Heeeey @nycmayor …

If this works I’m calling it civic engagement. If not, it’s audio storytelling and also just a joke

But about that bike lane under the BQE. Ya girl just got LAUNCHED

Things I have learned while working on this film —
1. Filming on boats is hard.
2. Filming birds is very hard.
3. Filming birds while on boats is VERY hard.
4. Filming birds while on boats while said birds are trying to bite you is VERY VERY HARD.

We went out with @jamaicabayguardian the other week to check on the osprey in Jamaica Bay for our movie The Last Guardian. Don has tracked the population across 40 years, all the way from 0 nesting pairs to more than 30.

This year has been the worst one yet. Usually, he’d see 2-3 young in each of the 30+ nests. This year we counted fewer than 5. Total.

Maybe it was the early heatwave or the late freeze or that brutal summer storm that tore through southern Queens and swept dozens of nests clear. He’s not sure yet.

Ten years ago I made my first short film alone in my apartment with a pile of clothes from my closet and a borrowed camera. I called it “what to wear at the end of the world” and it was about the breathtaking banality of living in a time of climate collapse and anyway its been on my mind lately by @juliadeguz

Spent this weekend breathing through something I like to call “the springtime crazies”

They show up every year like clock work when the days start getting long—it’s this overwhelming feeling like everything is beautiful and boundless and awful and indifferent and I’ve never felt more alive and I’ve never felt more alone and each day is a miracle but I can’t wait to die and also I need to kiss somebody right now
