There is no place called away.

This beautiful work by Nigerian artist Olumide Onaodipe hangs in my home. @olumideonadipe takes what we discard, newspaper, cardboard, produce sachets, and transforms it into something beautiful.

I discovered his work through my dear friend Ugoma Ebilah, founder of @mbarikola and @bloomartlagos in Lagos. Ugoma is so much more than someone with an incredible eye. She is a force in Nigerian and West African art and culture, creating spaces for artists, ideas and community to flourish. Seeing her celebrated in the NYT this week made me so proud.

I love this piece because it is a daily reminder: nothing we throw “away” actually goes away. And waste doesn’t have to be the end of the story. ♻️🌍 #sustainableart #sustainableartist taken in San Francisco, California by @juliaecollins

Capital can fuel a company, but it can also cloud the view.⁣

Julia Collins learned that firsthand after co-founding robotics-powered pizza startup Zume, which raised $445 million and hit a $2.2 billion valuation before eventually shutting down. It was that venture that cemented Collins as the first Black woman to co-found a unicorn company. Collins told Founder Brew that all that capital and rapid growth created plenty of external validation, even though the company hadn't necessarily achieved the same level of product-market fit. Her takeaway was that a good business still comes down to a product people love, not how impressive the fundraising headline looks.⁣
⁣
Now, as founder of sustainability startup Planet FWD, Collins is approaching capital differently. She says founders should first decide whether they need outside funding and how quickly they actually want to grow, rather than defaulting to raising as much as possible. For her, VC is "jet fuel" and not every company is built to run on it. ⁣

Sustainability doesn’t have to feel scary. It can be joyful 🌱

Posting this on the last day of summer because I’m not quite ready to let this one go. ☀️

Martha’s Vineyard has become one of my family’s most cherished summer traditions. We’re one of the newer families to make the Vineyard part of our rhythm, and I’m so grateful for the people who have welcomed us in, shared their traditions with us, and made space for us to create some of our own.

My friend Julie Wilson said something this summer that I haven’t stopped thinking about: “I don’t gate keep joy.”

That’s the Vineyard I love.

Family. Old friends and new ones. Beach days. Dancing. Long dinners. Kids running free. Black history and Black joy. And, this year, bringing @planet.haus to the island and gathering a beautiful community to imagine a future with more joy in it.

Maybe that’s what the best traditions do — they hold what came before while making room for something new.

Last day of summer. Holding onto every drop. 🌊☀️❤️
