𝕸𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖎𝖆 is out now!

I made it inspired by the musicians that made up “SITRSM” & its tour. I wanted to continue building songs in this realm & it became a sister album that wandered off to its own world

The fretless bass writing & performance of @devra_hoff are central to this record; I have been turning her bass up high in the mix since “Loud City Song”. @beth_goodfellow ‘s percussion is mesmerizing & her creative spirit contagious; studio recordings of her, Devra & me playing at once, vibing off each other, were the foundation for a lot of these songs
@chrisspeed11 ‘s kaleidoscopic winds form another main vocal in a way & he has generously contributed wild and visionary melodies to my songs since 2013. @suitesweetz transcendent flute is also like a voice—she sometimes is in fact singing into the flute, forming a pivotal moment in the record during “My Lost One”. One of my favorite voices ever is that of @jessikakenney , so I was delighted for her to bring her magic to “Materia 2”. It was a joy to record again @64sound w the assistance of @tyler_karmen & also record overdubs @stonesthrowstudios . Importantly, enormous thanks to talented @kennethjohngilmore who co-produced, engineered & mixed the record; I am fortunate to work w a longtime friend w a great ear who always gets it. And the great @heba_kadry did a beautiful job mastering

Thank you so much to @chantalaanderson for bringing her vision over to my house to shoot this special & unearthly photo that has become the cover. And as always, very appreciative of the great @mistermrbcooper for his gorgeous art design.

here is 𝕸𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖎𝖆 2, a song to hear before the full album is out this Friday. I wanted to enhance the dream and stretch out the harmonies of the original “Materia”, and hear others in it too. Incredible composer and vocalist @jessikakenney and I have been singing together a lot lately and I was happy she was into singing this song with me. it’s kind of 2 groups of 2—Jessika and me singing counterpointing fragments of the Materia melody, and @devra_hoff and @chrisspeed11 exchanging melodies on fretless bass and clarinet. and sustained chords throughout on the buzzing CS-60. With everyone playing the busy Hildegard-inspired melody or melodies around the jazzy chords, it can get kind of crowded, so it was a creative production feat with @kennethjohngilmore . once again, with the magic AceTone drum machine gratefully borrowed from @nitejewel

A reminder about the LAND 03 compilation I am a part of that I wrote a piece specifically for—I have been listening to both LAND 02 and LAND 03 in the car a lot since their release— they are for a crucial cause organized by @tuneforkstudios supporting grassroots initiatives like @beit.aam to raise funds for those displaced in Lebanon, but also these are beautiful collections of music that deserve your ears.
Right now, as you may know, the Israeli military is demolishing entire villages in Lebanon, so we see headlines like “Israeli Strike Kills Infant Girl During Her Father’s Funeral in Lebanon”.

@juliaholter and my remix of friend @jennyhval’s “The artist is absent” from her beautiful album Iris Silver Mist is out now @4AD

We are longtime fans of Jenny’s music. With “The artist is absent,” we wanted to extend the dream-like swirling of the chorus and to tease out some of the more fragile, elusive details of the production, creating a Baroque aria of sorts.

The LA listening party for 𝕸𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖎𝖆 @insheepsclothinghifi was a special event, and I’m appreciative of the friends who came out. so nice to have both the indoor listening room and the outdoor listening garden in the midst of the heat so people could feel free to move around, lie down, space out, as this moving state can be good for listening.
It was a treat to chat with @cafe__ale who provided a thoughtful introduction, and to talk, starting with the background of 𝕸𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖎𝖆 and then onto other topics like my first show ever that he hosted at @dublab , my early recordings, and the community in LA. it is lucky to get to grow as an artist alongside other artists, and in the talk I pointed out Ale himself, who is also an LA musician as well as having been a big part of Dublab, which has been a huge support for myself and so many LA musicians, and now @kcrwmusic , my partner @tashiwada (featured a lot on 𝕸𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖎𝖆), who also came of age as an artist with me playing shows of our friends’ music together in LA, and @kennethjohngilmore (co-produced 𝕸𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖎𝖆 with me), who was at what I believe was my first concert ever and we shared a lot of musical experiences early on. And dear friends and collaborators like @laurelhalo who I met when we were students and DJing radio but just barely starting to write, and just generally many beloved friends who go way back who were present in the space, thank you for being there.

And thankful again for @dominorecordco for organizing this with @insheepsclothinghifi and perhaps most importantly, in doing so, raising $543 for @immdef_lawcenter which is representing Southern California neighbors whose lives are being upended and, in some cases, destroyed by the federal fascist immigration program. on the eve of @juliaholter’s new album materia, a look back at “moni mon amie” from her second album ekstasis, released on rvng in 2012 𖤓𖤓𖤓

written and recorded over three years in los angeles, ekstasis is a record invested and indulged in the fleeting mysteries of life, guided by a deep-seated desire to escape the body and discover the undefinable. unfolding from her ongoing fascination with the shimmering ornamentation of gold-leafed medieval manuscripts, holter channeled reverential, open-minded songwriting into a mysterious collection of experimental pop, simultaneously haunting and hopeful

directed by yelena zhelezov (@yezhel), the “moni mon amie” video interprets the synth-laden song as an ardent appeal to the unattainable other, an intimate conversation performed with oneself. with holter playing both subject and object of desire, the video toys with and transforms everyday perception, as the miniature and the massive morph and grow interchangeable
