You might think you know conflict, but chances are you have never heard of "naive realism," the most important psychological bias that helps us understand how disagreement becomes toxic.

One of the unexpected joys of writing How to Disagree Better has been getting to have conversations with people who ask genuinely curious questions - and @guykawasaki is a great example!

We talked about why disagreement so often goes wrong, why persuasion isn’t always the right goal, what it means to actually make someone feel heard, and why the best conversations are often the ones that leave both people wanting to keep talking.

Guy brought his curiosity, humor, and willingness to challenge ideas (including mine), which made this a particularly fun conversation.

We even ventured into diplomacy, family conflict, body language, personal stories, and why the goal of a disagreement might simply be to build a bridge to the next conversation.

If you’ve ever wondered how to navigate difficult conversations without sacrificing your relationships, or your convictions - I hope you’ll enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it.

Thank you, Guy, for such a thoughtful and engaging discussion.

BOOK ALERT!

If you’ve been feeling anxious about how divided the world seems lately, then Julia Minson’s new book is one you need to read.

I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with her on different projects over the past four years. She has always been open to my out-of-the-box ideas for translating her extraordinary research on constructive disagreement into fun, engaging TV formats and films.

As I’ve been finding my way through academia, Julia has been an inspiring partner in creating work that feels both meaningful and impactful. What I love most is that she’s deeply creative, and our collaboration has given her the space to explore that side of herself, while also allowing me to explore the social scientist in me.

Today, I’m so happy that the world gets to experience what I’ve had the privilege of seeing up close over the years.

Congratulations, my friend! The world needs this book now more than ever. May this be the first of many.

Most of us walk into a disagreement with one goal: to win. But what if “winning” the argument is actually causing you to lose the bigger picture?

Lavin Exclusive Speaker Julia Minson’s new book, How to Disagree Better, is out today! Julia is a Harvard Kennedy School professor who has spent over 20 years studying the psychology of disagreement, and her book “will change your conversations, your negotiations, your relationships, and your life” (Katy Milkman, How to Change).

In this clip, Julia argues that we rarely stop to ask ourselves: “Why am I here and what am I trying to accomplish?” Whether you are setting a joint policy, trying to understand a counterpart’s perspective, or simply demonstrating your capacity for leadership to those observing you, every conflict has a goal. When you identify that goal upfront, you change the entire trajectory of the conversation.

A thoughtful and down-to-earth speaker, Julia offers keynote talks for a wide range of audiences: from organizations who want a competitive advantage for their teams, to leaders looking to bring us together in an age of polarization.
