Once I returned to New York from Armenia, I was inspired by the quality and work my students created at TUMO Center for Creative Technologies. Naturally, I felt compelled to create a skate zine using work from their final projects. I shipped copies to TUMO for each student (currently held up in customs, but coming soon!) I hope that my students seeing their work in print creates one of those moments where it “clicks”, where they realize they can pursue this professionally if they choose, and that their ideas are valuable and have a place in the world.

Special thanks to our skateboarders: Narek Sarkisyan, Ilya Nepshd, Landon Bourke, Gaston Montel, and to my incredible T/A Alena Sahakyan, and the TUMO Armenia learning labs team. taken in Yerevan, Armenia by @juliaparris

I was thrilled to be invited by TUMO Center for Creative Technologies to teach an intensive Editorial Photography workshop this summer in Yerevan, Armenia.

Using skate culture as a vehicle for teaching editorial photography, we spent most afternoons out on location, photographing different skateboarders throughout the city and at the skate park. I’ve always loved skate culture, and so do teenagers around the world, so it felt like the perfect way to apply lessons in environmental portraiture, movement, composition, moodboard creation, directing on location, and, of course, ideation. We also learned how to make strategic selects, do basic photo editing in Photoshop, and sequence a cohesive photo story.

My students went above and beyond my expectations, pushing themselves each day to reach new goals, refine their skills, and expand the way they think about photography and storytelling.

I couldn’t be more proud of what they created, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to play a small part in their creative journeys.

Thank you to the entire team at TUMO Armenia for welcoming me and making this experience possible. ❤️ taken in Yerevan, Armenia by @juliaparris

Being in Armenia gave me a deeper understanding of history and culture shaped by its position at the crossroads of the Silk Road, where people, ideas, traditions, and ways of seeing the world have been exchanging for centuries. The layers of history are everywhere, from the ancient monasteries dating back to the 5th century BC, to the more recent presence and legacy of the former Soviet Union, and now to the new tech companies, investments, and financial hubs that are rebuilding the infrastructure of Yerevan. I explored many of these spaces with my new TUMO friend @sarahbecan, an incredible illustrator based in Chicago. “Hey Siri, play Avril Lavigne’s Sk8er Boi!” 🛹

During this summer’s Alt July learning lab led by Julia Parris (@juliaparris) — a photographer, artist, and creative director from New York — Yerevan TUMOians explored photography through skateboarding and motion.

They learned to work with composition, light, and movement, capturing skaters’ impressive tricks through high-speed photography. At the end of the lab, the students produced a skateboard-themed photo series using high-shutter speed techniques.

This and several other sports-themed learning labs took place in collaboration with the UEFA Foundation (@uefa_foundation), as part of TUMO’s Alt July program. Throughout these labs, students created robot soccer players, sports animations, and visual stories. by @juliaparris

🌱This summer I was thrilled to be invited by Candela Photographic Arts in Richmond, Virginia to participate in Unbound 15, their annual international group exhibition. The gallery selected Gathering, a diptych from my ongoing series Dreamscapes and Constructed Realities, surreal imagined landscapes exploring how collective ecological grief seeps into our personal lives, shaping our inner worlds as profoundly as the landscapes around us.

In my diptych, Gathering, swirling topographic forms collide with a reconstructed sun whose misaligned segments suggest instability and disorientation. Beside it, fragments of a human face rest among feather plumes, dried flowers, and a silk-wrapped tower bound with yarn, evoking both vulnerability and resilience in the wake of environmental loss. Together, the images invite reflection on our relationship with the natural world and the role we each play in shaping its future. taken in Candela Photographic Arts by @juliaparris

For our Spring campaign, Plant the Future, the three seed packets, Courage, Vision, and Strength, offer a tangible way for recipients to respond to the campaign’s prompt: Plant the Future. Each packet contains seeds representing one of these qualities, inviting people to physically plant and care for what they want to cultivate in their lives. As the seeds sprout and grow, they become a living reminder that small, intentional actions we make today can create meaningful change tomorrow. I hope the symbolism of the project would not only resonate in this current climate, but also inspire something real in each person’s life.

Developing the art direction for the packaging was a lot of fun. For the background imagery, I created original cyanotype prints (often called sun prints) using natural plants and flowers to create different compositions on material coated with light-sensitive photographic chemistry. I used natural light from the sun to expose each composition, making it a beautiful collaboration with nature.

Inspired by slit-scan imagery, I was interested in how this morphing, distorted technique could reflect our current political and cultural landscape. I briefed WTF.Studio to create a series of original experimental titles. By physically dragging and manipulating the type during each pass of light on a scanning bed, they produced expressive letterforms that celebrate imperfection, giving each seed packet its own distinct identity and character.

🌱A huge thank you to Chloe at Sow True Seed in Asheville, for guiding production and the proofing process. Chloe was an absolute dream to work with, and her expertise helped bring this project to life.

☀️Thank you as well to Chase, for embodying the spirit of the campaign so beautifully through movement, expression, and grace in front of the camera.

🌸And of course, a heartfelt thank you to WTF.Studio for another fabulous collaboration, always being down to experiment, and creating the incredible titles, lock-up, and leading the layout and typography across the entire project. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @juliaparris

Our new campaign, Plant the Future, is a beautiful collaboration with Chase, centered around reconnecting with the land.

In a time when the news cycle is filled with stories of destruction and despair, we wanted to create a campaign rooted in hope, with a call to action reminding us the seeds we plant today will shape the harvest we gather in the future.
