Last night, we gathered around our dear Mama as she took her last breath. She was a devoted mother, a stupendous grandmother, a world traveler, and an artist through and through. Her perennial garden, her rhubarb coffee cake, and her sketchbooks were all legendary. She lived life to its fullest right up to the end. We truly don’t know how we will go on without her.

Please keep my dear Mama in your prayers tonight. This morning, her wonderful neighbor, who checks on her every morning, found her unresponsive, and it was determined that she’d suffered a stroke. I’ve been able to connect with them via Facetime, and am wishing I were there. We hope to know more about her prognosis tomorrow, but the doctors were amazed that, at 95 years old, she had been living alone and getting around without any help from canes or walkers.

She’s in the ICU right now - my brother Hal and cousin Amie and her husband Fred have been with her most of the day, and after flying in from Denver, my sister Caroline is spending the night by her side. Please surround them all with your love and support and healing thoughts. I love you, Mama. by @juliawyson

I am so proud of these exceptional young humans, all former students. They came back from schools all over the country and decided to spend their free time, in between summer jobs and internships and what-have-you, rehearsing and performing a Shakespeare play. I had the honor of popping into a rehearsal, and while I gave them a few notes, and worked a few moments, I mostly just sat back and enjoyed watching them navigate the delicate process of collaboration and cooperation that is part of making theatre.

It’s so gratifying to watch Nadya, who spearheaded the whole process, step into the role of producer, with all the stress and terror and joy that involves, and so validating to see the value they all place on the artistic community they’ve nurtured over the years.

Thanks to Independent Shakespeare Co. for giving them a place to play, and to Bailey Burcham who mentored Nadya through the process.

If you are in LA, please give them some love this weekend!! I promise it’ll give you hope for the future!! This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at noon!!

When the world feels hopeless and overwhelming, I just think about the 16 young people who have spent the last 4 months working together on not one, but two, Shakespeare plays - it is such a joy to collaborate with these creative, committed, and passionate young artists! They exemplify the attitude I try to instill in my students - “It’s fun to do difficult things!!”

Come see their work - the Teen Rep opens February 28th, followed by Comedy of Errors (with 13 more incredible young people) on March 14th at the The Hudson Theatres, and if you can’t make it to LA, perhaps you’ll consider supporting us (link in butter)
